An interesting article on the production of the WWII Merlin engine used in numerous fighter aircraft from both sides of the pond.
Quote: | The saga of the Roll-Royce Merlin V12 supercharged aircraft engine is one of the most gripping engineering and manufacturing stories of the 20th century. Here was an incredibly complex piece of machinery, conceived before the clouds of World War II gathered and continuously refined in the pressure cooker of combat, that would go on to power some of the most unforgettable piston-driven warplanes ever designed—the Supermarine Spitfire and the P-51 Mustang among them.
And at the center of its story are two great automotive marques, Rolls-Royce and Packard, which built Merlins by the tens of thousands simultaneously on both sides of the Atlantic. |

Most of the British bombers used inline engines as well, whereas all of ours used radial engines.

AIRCRAFT:
TF-51 Mustang
ENGINE:
Rolls Royce Packard built V-1650-7 Merlin 12 cylinder liquid cooled power plant.
HORSEPOWER: 1490
this plane was the fastest we had, and it even shot down an me262 jet
the P-38 was powered by two 1,600-hp Allison V-1710-111/113 liquid-cooled engines.
so not all our aircraft used radial engines.....!!!
