Rice keeps a long, long time and so you can eat it eventually, regardless. When the first case hit WA I loaded up on rice, it goes with so many things.
Recently, most of the way through a dish made with "vintage" rice (about a year old), I noticed some of the grains looked a little different and had 6 legs.

The key in buying vast quantities of rice is easier than you might think. I buy rice in 50 pound bags because it's super cheap normally that way. We package it into 2 quart mason jars, then seal it with a Food Vac attachment we bought - it sucks all the air out of the jar, and "seals" it. Uses the normal lids. Anyhoo, rice, beans, oats, wheat flour and so on stays fresh and doesn't develop bugs. We can eat it a year later with no issues smile.gif

^^^ This issue came up when I had lunch with BPJ last November when we were discussing his "stash". He didn't know about long-stored grains hatching moth larvae and the like. It will happen sometimes with raw nuts, too. What's this Food Vac for Mason jars of which you speak, SarBar? I've only seen vac sealing for plastic bags.

I'll add....when I worked for the Thai importer back in the day, my boss's wife would tell me stories about the big containers of rice they used for lunch in the factory she worked in when she was young. They ate so little they thought the grubs were bonus points. eek.gif

For those who are hoarding: Food production and delivery are performed by working people, very few of whom will die, and only some of whom will get sick. Same with the power grid. The old people who will sicken and die, as important as they are to the well-being of society, are not essential to these functions. The only shortages that will occur will be caused exclusively by hoarding. rolleyes.gif

Hoarding is subject to who is calling it that. Buying 50 pounds of rice for a family of 6 isn't hoarding. Buying 17,000 containers of sanitizer is.

Thanks for the link, Sarbar. up.gif I've often wanted to buy certain foodstuffs at Costco in bulk to get the price break, but then storage became an issue for me. Like Costco size oatmeal, for example. Freezing doesn't quite work b/c of the moisture buildup.

Just finished eating some 5 year out of date rice that had been in the SHTF supplies. No bugs, no funky taste. Kinda reminds me of MRE's. AND DON"T BE DISSING TWINKIES! Sorry for shouting.

You can if you have high ceilings and lots of windows and doors open!!!

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities
