"Social distancing" is bound to be the word (or phrase) of the year, and with the kid out of school indefinitely and the weather and tides cooperating perfectly, we practiced it by heading to the Olympic coast. I half expected a Spring Break type scene there, but no, aside from a handful of folks spread across Rialto Beach, it was fairly deserted. In the morning of the 17th the NPS web site said the Visitor Center in Port Angeles was open, but by the time we arrived this had changed. However, I was able to call in and get a 2-night permit for Chilean Memorial without issue. (Apparently this is best done now at recreation.gov.) We set off around noon on the warm cloudless winter afternoon, just me and the kid, first time for both of us on the Olympic Coast. I'm generally not a fan of 1-dimensional beaches, preferring the freedom of 2-dimensional mountains, but kids make everything fun, and I have to admit, parts of the Washington coast are quite spectacular. Leaving the world of viruses and TP jokes behind, we walked 3.4 miles up the beach through Hole-In-The-Wall at low tide to the beach immediately before the Chilean Memorial, where the ranger said it was OK to camp. Delighted to have the beach to ourselves, we spent the next two days playing in the sand, exploring to the north, taking pictures, and soaking in the sun. There is not really a whole lot more I can say, so will let the pictures do the rest of the talking.

Good for you for getting out to the coast. Spring is a great time for the ONP beaches.
For those considering a trip, plan for marauding raccoons, bring a tarp for rain. Be aware that the Ozette reservation is closed to non tribal members. Which denies access to Shi Shi from the north.

Yeah, sometimes it is so difficult to avoid scrunching snails and barnacles on beachwalks. I try to excuse myself by thinking that they might have as likely been crushed by a driftwood log - and that it means lunch for critters lower on the food chain.

Lovely photos. I am a wimp with bad hips and find that beach annoyingling difficult to walk on. So so happy to see a sea star! Hope they are making a come-back!!

Thanks for posting this mini-trip report, balm for the eyes.
Really nice photos - scenic plus atmospheric - and I am glad to see the kid's photos in the mix.
In photo 20, what is the bird poking out from behind the rock?

Not a bird expert but it's just a cormorant I believe.
Thanks all; honestly was expecting to get some flak. Things were different a week ago; a few days later and I would not have done this trip.
