I headed up the Bacon Creek road Friday evening to meet up with Kyle and JakeA. The plan was to camp out and get an early start on Bacon Pk on Saturday. The Bacon Creek road was fine until a rock slide covered the road some 4 miles from highway 20. I was nervous driving over it but made it with the confidence that others had done it. I made it through and soon found Jake and Kyle by the Bacon Cr bridge getting ready for camp. They couldn't drive any further up the road due to down trees, so we would have to start from the bridge early in the morning. We slowly woke and got hiking just before 4am. We walked up the road about a mile where we headed off into the woods where we saw a little flagging around 1400'. Steep forest and limited sight due to headlamps but we managed to get around some minor cliffs bands and put snowshoes on ~2500'. As we finally hit easier terrain, the skies lightened up and things became a little easier for a while. We followed the ridge to Pk 4800 with a couple ups and downs while taking in the amazing sights of Electric Butte.

We took a good break at the Pk 4800 summit looking down at the valley below that we had to drop into. We could see some recent slides, mostly due to the previous sunny week we just had. The hike down 500' was steep, so we carefully put in good steps to make it easy for our return. We got as low as 4200' to the valley floor to big snow covered boulders. We estimated the snow depth to be 15'-18'. We reached the narrow gully where we'd have to go as quickly as possible to try and stay away from any overhead hazards. The snow was in great shape and we soon were out of any potential problems areas. The views obviously improved the higher we got as we made it to the Diobsud glacier.

It was getting hot on the glacier as we slogged our way to the summit. We arrived just before noon, taking ~8 hrs from the bridge. The summit was calm and we took an hour long lunch up there soaking in the views.

On our way down, Jake and I contemplated tagging Pk 6600 aka Canadian Bacon but as it got warmer, we decided it was best to get down the steep gully before any afternoon slides begin. Kyle was happy about that and we all agreed it was the best choice especially since we still had a lot of up hill after getting down the gully. We postholed all the way down the gully in our snowshoes but made it down as quickly and safely as possible.

At the bottom of the valley, we had 500' to gain to get back up to Pk 4800. Luckily, our steps stayed in the shade all day and were in great shape getting us back up without any problems. A few more ups and downs had us back into the forest for the steep decent. We were happy to get to the road and walk back down to the bridge. We made it there at 530pm with plenty of daylight left.

Nice get fellas! I love that last pic, the background cliffs look enormous with the tiny people for scale and it's got a nice leading line too! That's a lot of gain in those conditions, well done. up.gif up.gif up.gif

Great looking trip guys. I really enjoyed that route. Looks like you had fresher conditions than we did.
