Blissful ignorance? Submariners likely unaware of pandemic
Quote:
LE PECQ, France (AP) — Of a world in coronavirus turmoil, they may know little or nothing. Submariners stealthily cruising the ocean deeps, purposefully shielded from worldly worries to encourage undivided focus on their top-secret missions of nuclear deterrence, may be among the last pockets of people anywhere who are still blissfully unaware of how the pandemic is turning life upside down. Mariners aboard ballistic submarines are habitually spared bad news while underwater to avoid undermining their morale, say current and former officers who served aboard France’s nuclear-armed subs. So any crews that left port before the virus spread around the globe are likely being kept in the dark about the extent of the rapidly unfurling crisis by their commanders until their return, they say. “They won’t know,” said retired Adm. Dominique Salles, who commanded the French ballistic submarine squadron from 2003-2006. “The boys need to be completely available for their mission.” Speaking exclusively to The Associated Press, Salles said he believes submariners will likely only be told of the pandemic as they head back to port, in the final two days of their mission. “Those who are at sea don’t need this information,” said Salles, who also commanded the nuclear-armed French submarine “L’Inflexible.” “The commander, I think, is doubtless informed about what is happening. I don’t think he’ll have all the details,” he said.

What Social Distancing Looked Like in 1666
Quote:
A lot of English people believed 1666 would be the year of the apocalypse. You can’t really blame them. In late spring 1665, bubonic plague began to eat away at London’s population. By fall, roughly 7,000 people were dying every week in the city. The plague lasted through most of 1666, ultimately killing about 100,000 people in London alone — and possibly as many as three-quarters of a million in England as a whole. Perhaps the greatest chronicler of the Great Plague was Samuel Pepys, a well-connected English administrator and politician who kept a detailed personal diary during London’s darkest years. He reported stumbling across corpses in the street, and anxiously reading the weekly death tolls posted in public squares. In August of 1665, Pepys described walking to Greenwich, “in my way seeing a coffin with a dead body therein, dead of the plague, lying in [a field] belonging to Coome farme, which was carried out last night, and the parish have not appointed any body to bury it, but only set a watch there day and night, that nobody should go thither or come thence, which is a most cruel thing.” To ensure that no one — not even the family of the dead person — would go near the corpse or bury it, the parish had stationed a guard. “This disease making us more cruel to one another than if we are doggs.”

Remote locations have some advantage in this mess...
Quote:
A coronavirus-free tropical island nestled in the northern Pacific may seem the perfect place to ride out a pandemic -- but residents on Palau say life right now is far from idyllic. The microstate of 18,000 people is among a dwindling number of places on Earth that still report zero cases of COVID-19 as figures mount daily elsewhere. The disparate group also includes Samoa, Turkmenistan, North Korea and bases on the frozen continent of Antarctica. A dot in the ocean hundreds of kilometres from its nearest neighbours, Palau is surrounded by the vast Pacific, which has acted as a buffer against the virus. Along with strict travel restrictions, this seems to have kept infections at bay for a number of nations including Tonga, the Solomons Islands, the Marshall Islands and Micronesia.
Extreme isolation: world's last virus-free corners hold tight

Maybe. That article says Turkmenistan has zero cases. Their secret police are arresting people for wearing masks.

Not necessarily -- during the 1918 influenza pandemic, small isolated villages often had much higher percentage of people killed -- a number of Inuit villages were wiped out https://www.peninsulaclarion.com/news/100-years-ago-spanish-flu-devastated-alaska-native-villages/ Samoa lost 1/5 of it's population to the 1918 pandemic. https://nzhistory.govt.nz/media/photo/influenza-pandemic-hits-samoa Isolation will prevent infection -- but only for a while -- the 1918 pandemic eventually reached nearly every community on the planet, with very few exceptions. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/01/gunnison-colorado-the-town-that-dodged-the-1918-spanish-flu-pandemic

Coronavirus lockdowns have changed the way Earth moves A reduction in seismic noise because of changes in human activity is a boon for geoscientists.
Quote:
Just as natural events such as earthquakes cause Earth’s crust to move, so do vibrations caused by moving vehicles and industrial machinery. And although the effects from individual sources might be small, together they produce background noise, which reduces seismologists’ ability to detect other signals occurring at the same frequency.

Closing alcohol sales is a risky thing. There are severe alcoholics who will wind up in the ER/ICU from withdrawal, hospital beds are needed and too few. It will prevent some people from developing alcoholism but the short term cost is severe and the long term cost it avoids is more easily mitigated. It will also reduce some exposure and infection rates from people not going to the store for alcohol.

Dangerous :/ down.gif Team allegedly sets new 'Cannonball Run' record on empty highways during coronavirus lockdowns
Quote:
Even Car and Driver, where the organizer of the original 1971 Cannonball Run, Brock Yates, was a writer and popularized the cross-country races of that era, published an editorial titled “Cross-Country Cannonball Speed Records Are Dumb” in response to the new record attempt. The exact route taken by the Audi from New York City’s Red Ball Garage to the Portofino Inn in Redondo Beach has not been revealed, and it is not known if any law enforcement agencies are aware of or investigating the incident. The average speed over the shortest route possible between the two points would be approximately 103 mph.
