I just went over to the fridge and ate a few bites of fried rice straight from the to go box from the thai place. Used my fingers cause I didn't feel like reaching for a spoon. Had a string cheese about 2 hours ago.

Hey Ski what are you using for stir fry sauce? Getting a little tired of my standard combination of oyster sauce, sherry, vinegar, and sesame oil.

Funny you should ask, because a buddy of mine sent me an email last night asking me if I was using oyster sauce. I had a bottle of it in the refrigerator years ago and it went rancid. I've never bought any since. I just use a LOT of garlic (a whole head in all those shrimp stir-frys on previous pages, and about half a head in that chicken one above), a LOT of ginger (about 1/3 cup minced in that chicken above, almost 1/2 cup in the previous shrimp one), a little sesame oil, soy sauce, about a teaspoon of white sugar, and a slurry of cornstarch and water. Pretty simple, but it works for me. Not so much garlic and ginger in the one with the salmon - tends to overpower the fish. I got the young man over at Northern Fish to shave the skin off of a piece of filet, pulled the pin bones out of it, cubed it, and rolled it around in some cornstarch before tossing it into the wok in some hot sunflower oil (which is what I use for frying.) Still working with that one because you have to handle the fish carefully so it doesn't get all mashed up. I take it out, then do the vegetables and sauce, and then put the fish back in at the last minute.

up.gif thanks. indeed lots of garlic+ginger here too. usually just deep fried tofu since that's all the kid will eat. have to plan carefully now since we're only making 1-2 grocery runs per month.

Dude, snacking is like Corn Chips. That's eating!

Amen to that. I love my grub, but to call those examples of culinary excellence, Snacks is sacrilege ! My answer to the original question? Homemade elk jerky. Trail mix with extra raisins and cashews from my 8 lb training pack that I carried 54 miles last week.

illegitimi non carborundum!
