Deceptive title by Bootpathguy. Per the article, the increase in crime is for burglaries of vacant, downtown, businesses. Not residential burglaries and not crime in general. The article also states, "it’s also important to note that Seattle may be an outlier. An investigation by USA Today found 19 out of 20 police agencies saw decreases in crime, including less theft and burglaries."

A take home for all of us from this story is the next time you go hiking, don't leave a thing in your car.

It would seem obvious to me, the longer people are not working the more the likelihood that people are going to start taking advantages of areas of opportunity. You can only expect people to be out of work for so long before they "Need things"!

He wasn't low risk to his victim.
Quote:
A Florida man has been arrested on suspicion of a murder committed just one day after he was freed from jail to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. Joseph Williams, 26, was initially booked into Orient Road Jail on March 13 for possession of heroin (less than four grams), a third-degree felony, and possession drug paraphernalia, a first-degree misdemeanor. But on March 19 Williams was one of 164 inmates deemed low-risk who was allowed to leave custody following the issuance of Administrative Order 2020-018 which allows people to go free early to decrease the risk of contracting COVID-19 in crowded facilities.
Those holding the pen signing such release orders should be *personally* fiscally and legally liable for crimes committed by early release prisoners during the period between their early release data and whatever date they were due to be released. They would not be on the streets if not for the order.

Yes, indeed. This entire release 'em (so that they *might* not get sick) idea is completely stupid....in my humble opinion, of course.

There is zero need for a crystal ball to know the fact that people cannot commit crimes against victims when they are not present to commit the crime in the first place.

You're right we should lock everybody on Earth up because of the fact that we would all be safe from each other that way. shakehead.gif In the electric car thread you were telling us saving lives isn't really important not now you're worried about preventing crime.

And in WA, you only have to pay 10% through a bail bondsman to be released. So bail of $2,500 only requires a $250 payment. If you want to educate yourself on the arguments for and against the release of prisoners from WA (Department of Corrections) DOC, you should read the briefs filed in 98317-8 - Shyanne Colvin et al. v. Jay Inslee et al. They can be found here. To summarize, when you are in prison, the government must take care of all your medical needs and keep you safe. If the government does not take care of your medical needs, or fails to keep you safe, the government will be liable. The Petitioner in the case above, and the WA Supreme Court, were concerned with DOC's ability to keep their prisoners safe during the pandemic. DOC (who is represented by the Attorney General) must balance liability for failing to keep prisoners safe, versus liability of having those prisoners potentially commit new crimes against citizens. Even if a prisoner is released, they are furloughed, which means they still have to report back to prison at a date in the future to complete their sentence. Of course, some might not show up on that date but a warrant will be issued and warrants are effective at eventually forcing people to do what they are legally required to do.
