I can find trip reports in late May other years, but the snow looks like more than what I would want to deal with. I'm not great with navigation. What do y'all think?
Several people I know skied in the Bean Creek basin environs last weekend.
Snow is fairly consolidated, probably don't need to bother with snowshoes, but boots, gaiters and trekking poles or an ice axe are very useful.
The crux is typically crossing Bean creek. It can be tricky depending on rock and log configuration to hop across with dry boots. Dead simple if you are willing to wade as it is usually never more than knee deep.
As for navigation it's not hard to find your way back to clear trail at the bottom of the basin if you're paying attention when you are hiking in.
The meadow areas where some camp in the upper basin floor area were either snow covered or running water the weekend a bit over a week ago. I'd expect any show free flat areas up in that zone to be soggy still.
You know not my talents ha ha But all this info has been incredibly helpful. I was considering bringing a tent and maybe spending a couple nights (I've slept on soggy plenty of times) but underwater kind of soggy I can do without. I thought maybe I should play it safe and go for Ingalls Creek...but after looking at pics of the Bean Basin area, Ingalls looks boring. (And probably too crowded.) I'll keep mulling it over, but any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
