Thanks, Roly Poly! Since the photos taken above I finally caved and got myself a bird-feeder. It's been a fun time watch some beautiful birds (and bunnies!) gather around the yard...

As I was taking photos of this young female house finch, still with its eye 'tufts', it comically puffed itself up to nearly twice its size:

Where did you see the cardinal? My range maps show this as an eastern bird! Thanks...

With every passing hour our solar system comes forty-three thousand miles closer to globular cluster M13 in the constellation Hercules, and still there are some misfits who continue to insist that there is no such thing as progress.

Yes, these are all from southwestern Pennsylvania. Cardinals and Blue Jays are plentiful here. Both are extremely pretty birds. The Blue Jay, in particular, is gorgeous.
