Does anyone have recent conditions report from either Carne or Mt David? How is the first stream crossing just after Phelps Creek TH before heading uphill to Carne? How much snow? - Can you get to the ridge that leads up to Mt David snow free and then snow starts higher on the ridge? That's my best guess but could be way wrong? - When does snow start on Carne mtn trail --- entering the Carne basin circa 6000 feet? - Road ok to Phelps creek TH - i.e. same as usual? Thanks!!

Road up Chiwawa was gated just above Chikamin road, about 12 miles from Trinity less than a week ago. The FS office in Leavenworth is absolutely no help. When I called for info the lady that answered had no info, told me at least 4 times that they only had one person out in the field so they didn't know. I had to drive all the way up there to find out it was gated. The White river road is clear to the end so you can access mt. David trailhead. No idea what snow conditions are like, but it seems mostly clear below 5000 feet.

Dave, did you happen to check out the Chikamin road?

No I didn't. Little Wenatchee road was gated just past the rock and gravel place though.

I skied Carne and surrounding peaks about 10 days ago. Had to start at the gate, mountain biked a few miles, then skinned 10 miles or so up to Phelps creek on snow. Snow continuous up to Carne summit from road. Very surprising how just one valley over the Entiat River road is completely melted out, but Chiwawa River road was totally snow covered. Some pictures here I'd be very surprised if the road is melted out by now.

Why did she have to tell you that 4 times? May 22 every year is too early. Apparently this year is the same as prior years, the bastards anyway.

Biked up to Phelps Creek trailhead yesterday to recon Maude. Road is clear to the trailhead minus a few small snow patches that are drivable. A few cars that possess the magic key have made the journey. Still gated near Chikamin Creek. Frustrating. Creek past Phelps trailhead is easily passable. Chikamin road is clear to about 1/2 miles from upper trailhead. Basalt pass trail still snowy.

Thanks for the update. I'd like to get up there when the road opens.

She answered all the questions the same. I made the mistake of assuming that someone might know whether a gate was closed or not. I had just got off the phone with the Entiat ranger district where they knew which gates were closed and why. The why was that their employees were out clearing downfall in an effort to open the road.

It must have been brushed out then. My understanding was that the Mt. bike people (leg power) were keeping it open as wide as a set of handlebars. The washout I encountered a few years ago was about 1/2 mile from the Chikamin Tie TH (the end of previously drivable road). I doubt they will ever get any heavy equipment up there. Too bad! That is a starting point for several good areas.

The Chikamin road was in excellent shape till 4200' ( where we hit heavy snow) it looked likely to be good above that point as well. Plenty cleared out for any vehicle.

Lower gate now open, did not go to the upper (about midway on the gravel portion of the road) gate, so not sure about that one.
