I remember when NWhikers was born, back in the dark ages. WTA had closed down their chat feature. Ah, thems were the days. Perhaps some readers of this site weren't born yet.

I didn't plan or expect this to make people nostalgic although I shouldn't be surprised. I just thought it would make a few people laugh to see middle aged and older people fooling the kids these days. I love the last screenshot where the youth clearly isn't sure if he's being messed with or not. But if it's a happy nostalgia I'll take it. smile.gif My first computer had BASIC as an operating system. Second one, too. This obviously set me up for a life of sedentary misadventure. Not that I can complain, I get to work from home, don't do physical labor, etc. I remember my mom spending $400 on a 20 MB hard disc, probably around 1990. It was a luxury at the time.

P.T.Barnum was too optimistic about human nature. It's more like a millisecond now.

I started working in the Risk Dept at Texas Instruments in 1987. No Windows; no mouse, all DOS and keyboard. Typed in long, looonng strings to get data from the Aston Tate dBase. No mouse, no click & get. Hand-typed strings with all kinds of punctuation. I was really good at it. Anyway, my first day, I had word processing training on a program they used, called Samna. They had tested WordPerfect and Samna, and thought that Samna was going to be the one to soar. But it didn't. Then I went into their legal dept, which did use WordPerfect. What a pain in the ass software that was. Learning all the keystrokes to do one thing was such a hassle. No mouse, mind you. Good Lord, what a pain in the ass. I also learned Harvard Graphics. TI had the world's 2nd largest electronic messaging system (the US military was first; at least that's what I was told). We called it "M-S-G." "Hey, Teresa, did you send Mike that M-S-G? " You'd go to DOS (alt-tab, and only 2 programs available at a time), and type MSG then your 4-letter handle, then and the recipents 4-letter handle. One person's handle was SEXY. It really was. Back then you could do that & get away with it.

We made a messaging system at my last job, feature inside a larger product, you could send things specific to that software. We polled every 60 seconds for new messages. Since it wasn't instant, I started calling it Pretty Quick Messaging. Caught on in the office, I wish that went on the "box."

I actually had to do that recently. Found a cheap one on craigslist. The disks worked fine. OK "recently" was more like 10 years ago but whatever.

I've got Zip drive with power supply and cable. It's one step away from the trash bion. Anyone who needs it can have it for postage.
