Right, if you have the time to take an extra day off that'd be great but some people have limited time or short notice for time off. They save what, 40% of the permits for walk ups? I'm just saying to save 20% of them for actual day of walk up to be fair.

Turning away people who want a permit just to save it for some unknown person who might or might not show up the next day is the opposite of fair.

You can't be soft with these guys. You gotta just go in there and boldly make demands! Threaten to go anyways!!! Make a scene, double down!!! They'll cave.

I told them if they didn't give me a permit for Sahale camp, I would unleash every bear in the park! I didn't tell them the bears were already off leash. But I got my permit.

Park rangers, who are public servants, love it when you do this. In all seriousness, I think being flexible is key. I got a one-night day-of permit at like 4pm (lol) with a buddy for copper ridge back in 2018. We had to hike a 27-mile second day and it was the only site left on the loop, but it can be done! Others in the thread seem to think it's gotten harder to do this over the past couple years though so...

Also you don't need a permit if you have a bear costume.
