You won't run into continuous snow until you are almost to the lake.
By then it is pretty much flat.
And except for a few blow downs, the trail is in its normal great condition.

That's all there is to say.

Is this the one in the goat rocks wilderness, or the one off until highway 2?

The first time I hiked that trail several years ago the surprise was a rotting dead horse covered in sticks and rocks at the stream just below the lake. I guess someone was on the PCT with their horse but didn't make it out.

I'll have to go up there in a few weeks when it melts out more so I can explore the areas beyond the first (Surprise) lake.
