Anyone know the status of this? Been closed for some time; curious if access is allowed yet. I believe WTA did a work party last year. Yakama Nation website has no info, and based on experience, calling them is not productive.
Not open yet, though there are rumors that this may be the year. I heard that the infamous road is being upgraded to a nice flat gravel route. WTA has good Yakama connections and gets permission to do trips even when it is not open. Hopefully hikers will soon get to enjoy the work they have been doing in recent years.
It's a fairly easy hike over from Cold Springs, and rarely patrolled. Leave some extra room in your pack for snow machine debris cleanup. In the past, it has only been open to non-tribal members between July 1 and Sept 1.
Unfortunately I just got a report that due to the extremely bad covid19 situation in Yakima County, most of the tribal work force has been let go to avoid further spread. This means all work in preparing the area has stopped and opening this year is a lot less likely than we thought before.
