Everyone in the NWH community who cares about Alpine lakes Wilderness should support ALPS. My personal opinion!

Cool TR.
I was thinking of going in paddy go easy and doing a loop of it hitting sprite, and cradle on the way to these lakes. I really appreciate the beta on don't go right so I don't make the same mistake 😅

Fresh beta (I was there yesterday):
There is a well-worn, unofficial trail that leads to Upper Klonaqua passing along the south (left) shoreline of Bobs Lake. This trail leaves the main trail to Lower Klonaqua, a bit less than a mile before reaching the lower lake, and roughly follows the outlet stream of Bobs before making a high contour above the south side of the lower lake, then drops down to the SE corner of the upper lake. At the top of the switchbacks on the main trail, just passed the 5000' "no fires" sign, the trail begins a long traverse north (hiker's right) toward the Klonaqua drainage. Near the beginning of the traverse, you will see a well-worn boot path heading left off the main trail (sometimes a cairn here). If you reach the boulder/talus field crossing below a 100' granite cliff on the main trail, you missed it, turn around, and go back down the trail 75-100 yds and it will be more obvious from this POV. This path leads to Bobs Lake, then continues along to Upper Klonaqua. This route avoids bushwhacking around either side of the lower lake.

Thanks to you and altasnob for the cheers for mentioning ALPS. I was unaware of them.
I wasn't sure what to think about the dams in the ALW. They were there before the ALW was created, so it makes sense they should be allowed to continue.
However, the most recent (2020) newsletter from ALPS paints the picture in a sobering light. Basically, the orchards in the area get plenty of water. The dams need rebuilding for safety. But the real issue is the expansion (code word is "upgrade") of these dams is to support future suburban sprawl. The irrigation district sells it's excess water to real estate developers:
Quote: | All kinds of documents,
committees, and endless process
exist to make this look like an
effort to support orchards in the
valley. Almost never mentioned is
that IPID has sufficient water for
orchards, and can and does sell
water to developers. And if they
get more water from the Alpine
Lakes Wilderness, the extra water
will go not to orchards but to
residential developments which, if
history is any guide, will gradually
supplant the orchards and turn the
Wenatchee valley into yet another
extension of suburbia. |

If they do this at Klonaqua, what is to stop them from doing it to other lakes in the wilderness?

Exactly. And it's already been done in the Enchantments (in the 1930's), a 7-foot wide tunnel was blasted at Snow Lake. Controlling/limiting unfettered Wilderness destruction is exactly what ALPS is working on. The whole article is worth the read to learn more:

Here is how they drain the snow lakes. that stream of water shoots a hundred yards down the valley towards Nada lake.
