I’m pretty new to fishing alpine lakes but want some variety when floating (i can imagine the learning curve using a fly set up in my pack raft to be a process...) so any recommendations for an ultralight spinning reel that works best in those situations? I know casting distance may be a struggle but just want some options and any pointers and tips are greatly appreciated.

No idea what my Mitchell-Garcia 308 models weigh, but I never paid more than $20 bucks for any of them. (Google search says 7 ounces.) Last one was $10 bucks on Craigslist. Most of the rest of them I picked up in tackle shops.

Or, alternately: -Learn to roll cast for tight quarters -Bring a spare spool for the fly reel loaded with either sinking line, or a sinking tip.

It's been many years, but I usually had my best luck with spinning gear and a fly/bubble set up. Pinch down barbs on your hooks and do catch/release.

A classic Mitchell 300 was the first open faced reel I ever fished with back in the 60s or 70s. They weren't skirted like modern spinning reels and lighter, smaller reels started to be produced. The Mitchell 300 in the link above is designed for 12-lb test line and weighs 9.9 oz. The Mitchell 310 is their ultralight 500 size reel. It weighs 6.8 oz.

I use a Daiwa UL7 (Ultra Light) that survived 20+ years in my pack and works like it did out of the box. They don't make this model anymore, but I think it's going to outlast me.

I am a little confused by the subject title. Why even consider putting a spinning reel on a fly rod when fine matching spinning rods exist?

Mostly it is so that fly anglers can spin fish without carrying a second rod. I really enjoy spin fishing with a fly rod so it is my preferred setup when spin fishing.

Interesting. I have never done well spin casting with lures in high mountain lakes, but my experience with that was mostly in the Beartooth Range. Once I started fly fishing I pretty much abandoned my spinning gear. For a few years as a youth I carried an Eagle Claw 7.5' TrailMaster combo pack rod, but I primarily used it for spinning. Once I put a fly reel on it and caught my first trout on a rise to a dry fly I was hooked, and it was soon replaced with a "real" fly rod. I still have 2 of those Trailmasters in perfect condition, in the original socks and aluminum tubes! hahaha.

I've done really well casting lures in the Beartooth and I've done really well in the Beartooh with flies. No matter where you are some days flies work better and some days lures work better.

I may need to try lures again. My experience was the lures spooked the fish in those gin clear lakes. Maybe a 3/8 oz Thomas Cyclone was too large for those lakes? embarassedlaugh.gif yuk, yuk Just kidding, I remember trying 00,0, and #1 Mepps, along with little spoons, small roostertails, etc. The fish would just ignore them or scatter in high lakes. The bigger lures worked great in the Yellowstone River though.

I'd fish with the 3/8oz Thomas lure over the 1/8oz #1 Mepps in high lakes. 3/8oz is really too heavy for my rod so I fish lures that are either 3/16oz or 1/4oz. They generally don't spook fish unless you plop them on the head.
