The article explicitly left out the number of people who are symptomatic. 85 babies sounds serious. 85 asymptomatic babies is good news. They say eventually everyone will get Wu flu, which means that at some point everyone will test positive for the antibodies. The only numbers that matter at this point are hospitalizations and deaths. Both of which are far below the peak back in April/May or so.

From Dr. Eric Ding this morning: 17) What does all the major clinical trial phases mean? Here is an info graphic. The Oxford trial was a phase 2 , while the Wuhan was a combo Phase 1/2. We still need phase 3 trials, which are underway. Oxford vaccine’s phase 3 ongoing in Brazil. Click to enlarge for greater readability. ~z

This is crazy. Apparently lots of partying goes on in the Brewster area. Omak has the same amount as last week, but Brewster has over 100 new cases since Friday. According to the tracing folks, it is due to the 4th of July parties in the community. https://okanogancountycovid19.org/covid-19-data/

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

The data that Johns Hopkins posts on their GitHub site is a cumulative count of COVID cases and deaths for all USA counties. They actually post 2 sets of data. One set they update as new info becomes available and the other set they do not update. I now have code that reads the dataset that Hopkins updates and converts those cumulative counts of cases and deaths into daily counts for all USA counties. My code produces csv files that anyone can download. Want to make your own charts/graphs? Grab some data and have at it. For more information on (1) the GISsurfer map I produce that shows recent trends and (2) data downloads, please see this PDF file: https://mappingsupport.com/p2/help/COVID19-new-cases-per-day.pdf

My in-laws, (86 & 89) are FLA snowbirds. They have a residence in Connecticut. During the regular snowbird migration season (April/May) CT had huge COVID issues so they decided to stay put in FLA. Now it has flipped and they are trapped in their condo. Scared to go out and do anything. They are the overly controlling, excessively neat, certain they are 100% right about 100% of everything 100% of the time, faux news rage addicts. I wonder what they think about all of this now. You can't discuss it with them as any questioning of the messiah is blasphemy. We have become a nation of spoiled 3 year olds and out of control rage-oholics. The swamp got drained and septic tank got put in its place. the next guy is gonna need one of these...

Since I have no expectations of forgiveness, I don't do it in the first place. That loop hole needs to be closed to everyone.

I heard an NPR report yesterday to the effect that a lot of people who are "normally" pro-vaccine are saying that when the first Covid vaccines come out for general public consumption, they are NOT going to be in line, instead taking a "you first" attitude. This is something I've been wondering about myself, since normally it takes a minimum amt of time (like 1.5 years) and sometimes longer, to come up with an effective vaccine. How can researchers speed up such a process? I get that there might be certain bureaucratic inefficiencies that could be eliminated to speed things up, but how can you speed up a culturing process (ie, making things grow faster). Makes me wonder about shortcuts the vaccine developers might be taking that will lead to problems.

So, having spent 20+ years as a scientist in biotech developing targeted cancer drugs (antibody & vaccine based) the answer I could give you is modernized technology. Identifying the proper sequence for the antigen and beginning to express the protein is pretty cookbook. I could almost have my AP Bio students do it these days. Once you have that protein you can start work to see if it is immunogenic. The testing processes for in vitro/in vivo activity are much more streamlined too. Efficiencies in trial design (for example, combining your Phase 1&2 trials) saves time and money. The slow parts from what I can see are going to be the phase 3 trial as you need to establish that the subjects didn't get the disease. It would be much easier if they'd just inject all 30000 volunteers at the exact same moment but it'll be drawn out over several months. If it looks good they may go with an interim analysis (and hope the final doesn't bite them). The other longer timeline is going to be the stability studies of the material. There are some ways to speed those up but only too a point. Any weird side effects are really only noticed when a drug hits widespread use. Gotta get that biological variation involved. The field of vaccinology is sufficiently well advanced that it knows what it needs to see. Your comment about "cutting corners" is nonsense conspiracy paranoia. The FDA regulates the heck out of drugs (which is one reason that some cost a lot) and although they may give provisional approval status, its normally pending more data. It depends on the medical need. If something gets problematic they can pull approval.

Thanks for expounding on some of the details of vaccine development, Arginine. What prompts current skepticism may be the fact that early on, Dr. Fauchi (et al) were talking about 1-1.5 years for vaccine development, and now it's suddenly much shorter. Perhaps much of the speeded-up timeline has to do with giving faster "provisional approval status", as you mentioned.

It's not my paranoia, but you have to admit that with the current climate of politicizing science and all the drug companies rushing to be the first to market with a vaccine, glossing over a lot of safety issues doesn't seem too far-fetched, especially given that so many gov't agencies have been corrupted by corporate interests. Especially now. Look what just happened to the CDC - they've just had the rug yanked on them as the central clearing house for covid statistics.

I'd now add anatomy to needed remedial classes for our area. Saw a few folks in a store today who think they breathe through their chin. That's where the mandatory mask was placed.

Anne Elk, today while on a long drive I happened to have NPR on during their midday show "Here and Now". I listened to one of the hosts (Robin Young) interview Dr. Aileen Marty, an infectious disease specialist at Florida International University. This may have been the interview you heard. They discuss the vaccine research and a feasible time line. And they mention the amount of time that it takes to see if it's truly effective (months/year) and then the safety timeline for side effects (many months/year or more). Here is a link to that podcast. Note: there are several interviews on this podcast, several are political. The medical interview begins at minute 11:38 or so. You can advance the player manually in 15 minute intervals or even moving the slider bar at the bottom. ~z

Thanks for adding that reference, zephyr. Not sure it's the same, will check it out.

I've seen several instances of that in the local Fred Meyer and a few other places. I think it might fit into the bin the psych world calls "oppositional defiant disorder".

Recent observations: Local pub still in defiance - Packed every night with nobody wearing masks. Local restaurant tonight - 5 workers with masks, all on the chin or hanging off the ear. Work - Nobody yet wearing a mask Opening day of baseball - Fauci wore a mask. 1st pitch was laughable. Hike last weekend - Maybe 40% put a mask on as I passed by. Myself - No mask to date.

When asked "Why do you climb"? Simply respond "Why don't you"?
