Nice work. This trip was enjoyable in spring when the brush is covered and allowed time for Devil's Thumb on the same day. The brush makes you stronger.

Yeah we lost the trail big time. We made the most of it though and hugged the creek. We saw 5-6 pretty awesome waterfalls but not the one I wanted by the mine. Eventually I found some flagging but it was getting late so my kid and I turned back.

That sounds like a great day indeed.

Well thankfully the FB hikers haven’t gotten into off trail hiking yet, so there is that.

Pretty awesome to hike for 8 hours and not see another person.

Right. My friend and I took a wrong turn while hiking in the Bob Marshall and ended up in Grizzly Bear basin and then onto a trail that was abandoned due to wildfire-dead fall...didn't see anyone for 2 days. Then when we arrived at the Indian Creek guard station, there were mass people, and horses.

I did this as part of the Boealps mountaineering course in spring 2008. Was a fun little snow climb, relatively low effort. Interesting to see the conditions without all the snow.

Cool, I can't decide whether to look at your photos or save it for personal viewing. I think I need to get back up there.
Next you should try Helena lake, up the Independence lake inlet stream, heading NW and over a 500'? high Ridge and down the other very steep west side, with brutal bushwhacking and questionable route finding...great fun!
Ps...if you climb Devils Thumb you can look down on Windom lake below to the NE, the route to Helena continues from there.
