I took my 2 sons out for an overnighter towards Benzarino this past weekend. Ryan loves to fish, so he and Jayden would spend some time at Lake Ann and meet me later at the small lake below last chance pass. After we went separate ways, I headed up to Maple Pass and looked at the route they would have to cover and find camp. It wasn't as open as I had thought it was, so I hiked back down to the lake to get the boys so we could do the off trail traverse together. The way down to the basin below Corteo Pk was straight forward but after that, it was a lot of steep side hilling and weaving in and out of brush to get to the small lake. I was glad I went back to get the boys although we had a backup plan incase they didn't lake what they saw either.

I was undecided whether I'd go for Benzarino this day or early the next, it all depended on how the lake felt. I waded in for a bit and it was cold! Much snow is still melting into it, so I knew I wouldn't spend time swimming. Ryan took a nap, Jayden rested as I prepared to climb the peak. Some more ups and downs and I was at the smaller but cooler looking tarn below Benzarino. It was only half melted out but the views were great and the camp sites would have been much better. I reached the S ridge of Benzarino and climbed class 3/4 to the summit. Great views all around as I didn't spend much time at the summit so I could get back to camp.

I got back to our camp 3 hrs after I left, we had bivies and found a couple different flattish boulders above the lake to sleep on. The sunset above the lake was great.

We were up and hiking back out by 630am. The boys were a little better at the side hilling than the day before so our traverse back to Maple Pass went faster. We reached the overflowing parking lot at 1030am and went home.

Wow! Nice shot. That tarn is actually kind of ugly by larch season, more of a mud hole.

Great trip with two of your three hikers! Just curious if the register was there, or has it too been absconded?
