Long ago in 1958 when I was a kid we were visiting my uncle who had been the sheriff,  mayor, and highway commissioner in Gallup, New Mexico. The subject of UFOs came up. He said he knew the Sheriff in Roswell and he had removed bodies of aliens from the crash site and they were stored by the Army elsewhere. It creeped the hell out of me. This was well before it became a thing. I do not know if he was telling the truth or just trying to give a thrill (Italians can have a wicked sense of humor). It is what it is.

Woman who illegally entered Yellowstone falls into thermal feature and is burned

Brett French, reporting for The Billings Gazette  wrote:
A woman who illegally entered Yellowstone National Park while it was closed due to the coronavirus pandemic was badly burned on Tuesday morning after falling into a thermal feature, a park official said.

The woman, who was not identified, was reportedly backing up while taking photos and fell into a hot springs or fumarole at Old Faithful.

"We do not know which thermal feature she fell in," said Linda Veress, park public information specialist in an email. "We do know that she suffered burns."

After falling into the thermal feature the woman drove north through the park before being stopped by park rangers about one mile south of Mammoth Hot Springs.

"Due to her injuries, she was life-flighted to the Burn Center at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center," Veress said. "This incident is under investigation."

Yellowstone has been closed to the public since March 24 in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak at the request of county health officials and the governors of Montana and Wyoming. Although there are plans to reopen the park with limited services, a date has not yet been set.

Last fall a man walking off a boardwalk was burned after falling into a hot springs. Cade Edmond Siemers sustained severe burns. In 2016 an Oregon man died after he reportedly tried to soak in a Yellowstone hot spring.

There are more than 10,000 thermal features in Yellowstone, from geysers and hot springs to steam vents and mudpots. In some of these the water temperature exceeds 400 degrees.

That's why park visitors are told to stay on boardwalks and not travel off trail in thermal areas.

Unfortunately, this is real.
Beyond parody: CNN taps Greta Thunberg for expert coronavirus panel

Quote:
The brave, hard-hitting journalists over at CNN are hosting a town hall Thursday evening on Coronavirus: Facts and Fears. Our First Amendment warriors are only bringing viewers the best of experts, such as former CDC Director Richard Besser, former HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, and … teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg.

You literally cannot make this stuff up. This would be a masterful parody. It could have been one of the Babylon Bee’s finest works. Yet no, this is actually the reality of CNN in 2020.

The experts.

The Park is CLOSED.

Ergo: any person who was in compliance with the rules would not have suffered this fate.

Having suffered second-degree burns over 30% of my body twice thus far in this lifetime, I have absolutely no sympathy at all for this woman. None. Zip. Nada.
(And believe me, I know all about how much burns hurt.)

Yes, which is why I was separating out the poaching part.

I would also find it a "sad and unfortunate event" if some other type of significant misfortune befell one of the people here who indicated they had been poaching closed Washington hikes. Or if someone suffered significant burns when their classic Pinto caught on fire because they dropped their hot coffee on their lap while a single occupant in the HOV lane.

Nobody no matter how stupid deserves that kind of harm and it's disturbing to see people proudly and openly proclaiming their total lack of empathy.

Blue ring octopus bites are painless and fatal. My students once brought one in a jar to science class, they are quite beautiful. shakehead.gif
