OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — The East Beach Road Fire grew to 84 acres Sunday, but firefighters got a break with a cool, damp marine system that came into the area this weekend that helped tamp down the fire. A total of 225 firefighters and eight hand crews are battling the blaze, which ignited Wednesday in steep terrain on a hillside on the north side of Lake Crescent. The fire was still listed at just 15 percent contained Sunday, although crews have been busy all weekend building lines around it.

News Release Date: August 4, 2020 East Beach Road Fire Status: Acres Burned: 84 acres Cause: Human Caused Engines: 3 Tenders: 0 Helicopters: 0 assigned but available locally Hand Crews: 5 Heavy Equipment: 0 Fallers: 2 Containment: 65% Total personnel: 175 (with anticipated reduction in crews throughout the day) Incident Summary: On Wednesday July 29 at 4 pm a wildfire was discovered just north of East Beach Road near Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park. The East Beach Road Fire was first reported to Olympic National Park Fire Management. The fire is burning primarily on a south facing slope in steep heavy timber with shrub understory and is being pushed uphill by terrain driven winds. Smoke may be visible in the weeks to come as the fire continues to smolder and creep in areas too hazardous for fire personnel to work in. The fire is suspected of being human ignited and the cause and origin are still under investigation. Current Situation: Firefighters continue to manage the fire with hose systems allowing direct water delivery to hot spots. Fire personnel will work to widen and improve existing fire line. Monday brought cool and misty weather patterns to the region, the minimal rainfall did not extinguish the fire. Due to continued rolling debris and hazardous work areas, smoldering and creeping of fire activity is expected to continue over the next few weeks. Inversion layers and shifting wind patterns may push smoke into areas surrounding the fire. Operations begin to reduce personnel as containment percentages increase on the fire. Evacuations and Closures: East Beach Rd is closed from Hwy 101 to Log Cabin Resort. Access to East Beach Rd between Hwy 101 and Log Cabin Resort is for local residents only. Log Cabin Resort is still operating and anyone trying to gain access to Log Cabin Resort will need to take Hwy 112 to Piedmont Rd. Day use recreation sites along East Beach Road in Olympic National Park are closed to the public at this time. Cooperating Agencies: Olympic National Park, Department of Natural Resources Olympic Region, Olympic Interagency Fire Management, Clallam County Sheriff’s Department and Emergency Services. From the Western Washington Type 3 Incident Management Team Facebook Page on August 4, 2020
Due to the hazardous situation East Beach Road will be closed to all traffic in the fire footprint. This area is roughly 2 miles from the 101 intersection. The closure is due to immediate hazards from rolling debris as well as a danger tree located in an unsafe area to fall and remove. All access west of the fire needs to be accessed from Highway 112.
Here is an example of some of the danger trees that are throughout the interior of the #eastbeachroadfire. These trees are weakened by fire and pose a threat to firefighters falling and rolling down the hill. Fallers are used to bring down trees in directions that minimize fire spread and make suppression safer for firefighters. Peninsula Daily News Tuesday update

Hazard trees on steep terrain pose a danger to firefighters. Duff and debris in the understory of the fire footprint continue to smolder and creep. News Release Date: August 5, 2020 East Beach Road Fire Status: Acres Burned: 84 acres Cause: Human Caused Engines: 2 Tenders: 0 Helicopters: 0 assigned but available locally Hand Crews: 3 Heavy Equipment: 0 Fallers: 2 Containment: 65% Total personnel: 84 Incident Summary: On Wednesday, July 29 at 4 pm a wildfire was discovered just north of East Beach Road near Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park. The East Beach Road Fire was first reported to Olympic National Park Fire Management. The fire continues to smolder on a south facing slope in steep heavy timber with shrub understory acting as the main fuel. Smoke may be visible in the weeks to come as the fire continues to smolder and creep in areas too hazardous for fire personnel to work in. The fire is suspected of being human-ignited and the cause and origin are still under investigation. Current Situation: Fire operations begin right sizing as fire containment progresses. Hazard trees and rolling debris within the fire footprint pose a danger to motorists traveling along East Beach Road. As a result, a hard closure is implemented for East Beach Road (see details below). Firefighters continue extinguishing hot spots and are cautiously and deliberately identifying snags and hazards within the fire footprint to mitigate potential road damage from rolling debris. Anticipate ongoing smoke in the Lake Crescent and surrounding areas as the fire continues to smolder within the forest understory. Road Closures: Due to this hazardous situation, East Beach Road is closed to visitor traffic at the Hwy 101 intersection. Log Cabin Resort is still operating and can be accessed via Hwy 112 to Joyce-Piedmont Rd. All day use recreation sites along East Beach Road in Olympic National Park are closed. Local residents can access property up to 2 miles west of Hwy 101 or from Log Cabin Resort up to the hard closure. Cooperating Agencies: Olympic National Park, Department of Natural Resources Olympic Region, Olympic Interagency Fire Management, Clallam County Sheriff’s Department and Emergency Services.

Such a powerful photo! The downhill instep of this tree has been shaved away, but not deeply notched. Is the idea a delayed felling, when the fire burns through the thinner area first and eventually topples the tree in the chosen direction?

Firefighters cautiously monitor smoldering understory in steep terrain. Minimal fire activity may continue within the forest floor until autumn months provide substantial rainfall. ONP News Release Date: August 7, 2020 East Beach Road Fire Status Acres Burned: 84 acres Cause: Human Caused Engines: 1 Tenders: 0 Helicopters: 0 assigned but available locally Hand Crews: 1 Heavy Equipment: 0 Fallers: 0 Containment: 83% Total personnel: 39 Incident Summary: On Wednesday, July 29 at 4 pm a wildfire was discovered just north of East Beach Road near Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park. The East Beach Road Fire was first reported to Olympic National Park Fire Management. The fire continues to smolder on a south facing slope in steep heavy timber with shrub understory acting as the main fuel. The fire is suspected of being human-ignited and the cause and origin are still under investigation. Current Situation: Recent rain brought 0.2 inches of precipitation to the fire area; however, the minimal rainfall did not extinguish the fire. Even with wetter weather, the East Beach Road Fire has potential to smolder and creep in heavy accumulations of downed logs, underground root systems, and forest debris. Occasional smoke at Lake Crescent and the surrounding area will most likely continue until heavy rainfall in autumn months. Flames may be visible after sundown as fire activity becomes more noticeable in the night sky. Fire officials will continue to monitor fire behavior and provide updates as needed if the situation changes. Expect a reduction in daily updates as fire activity diminishes. Road Closures: Due to the hazardous situation, East Beach Road is closed to visitor traffic at the Hwy 101 intersection.

East Beach Road Fire Update – Road Closure Remains in Place for Public Safety The East Beach Road Fire at Lake Crescent that started July 29 burned 84 acres and is 98% contained. The hot weather through the weekend tested the security of the East Beach Fire and may have allowed some of the interior heat to burn itself out or clean up the unburned islands. Public safety remains a concern. Debris continues to come down off the steep slope onto the road. Due to the hazardous situation, East Beach Road is closed to all visitor traffic, including bicycles and pedestrians, at the Highway 101 intersection. Log Cabin Resort is still operating and can be accessed via Highway 112 to Joyce-Piedmont Rd. All day use recreation sites along East Beach Road in Olympic National Park are closed. Local residents can access property up to 2 miles west of Highway 101 or from Log Cabin Resort up to the hard closure.
