Oops. Thanks neek. I got busy wrestling autocorrect over CDN and missed that I’d also removed the M. Best.

Despite all their whining about the "excessive" fine, I suspect it's still chump change to the LL Ski Resort Corporation relative to how much they rake in every year. The fine is likely even tax deductible. This is what corporations often do: whatever they want and then just build in the expected fine as the cost of doing business. huh.gif

Lake Louise ski area is somewhat unique ski area in Canada in that it is in a national park (unlike Whistler or Revelstoke). Canada may impose the fine here but do they even care what happens on the rest of their crown land that is not in a national or provincial park? Seems way more relaxed environmental laws overall compared to the various laws in the US that apply to federal lands.

They don't have regulatory bodies like the EPA et al, like we do. It's always been my understanding that they let logging companies (et al) police themselves. But the First Nations People seem to have a better scorecard than American Natives in fighting for their land/resource rights, at least in BC, the twinning of the southern pipeline to Burnaby notwithstanding. The Northern tribes did well keeping a pipeline and tanker traffic out of the Great Bear Rainforest.

Is that too much disincentive to break the law? Maybe the court should pay them for illegal behavior instead?
The article wrote:
Lake Louise’s lawyer argued the fine was ‘grossly disproportional and demonstrably unfit’ as a result of remediation efforts the resort took after the trees were cut down.
This is like saying I set my house on fire for the insurance, but I tried to put my neighbor's house out when it caught, so I shouldn't face any real penalty.
