This zoomable/adjustable light pollution map is pretty interesting. I've been using it in trip planning.

One interesting anomaly that caught my attention is the massive light blob in the NW corner of North Dakota; one sixth of the state! That's it in the upper left corner of the pic; the blob in the lower right is the Minneapolis/St Paul area.   eek.gif I'm guessing that the huge w. ND blob is a localization of numerous wells (fracking or otherwise).  There's nothing else out there but little tiny towns.  Anybody know?

Probably gas flares the oil there is pretty thick and the gas is burnt off, so it goes.

Last year on a night flight out of Seattle to Chicago, I watched seemingly endless miles of large-scale grids of greenish lights scrolling by below.  Infrastructure for fracking was my assumption.  It was a moonless evening of murky clouds.  Coupled with the eerie green lighting, it looked like flying over Mordor.

I should have learned by now that you can query Google about nearly anything and get the answer.  Sure enough: Mordor.  You gotta feel sorry for the poor farmers - they have no say over it b/c of not having mineral rights, from way back.
