Looks like this fire has burned Black Canyon -- what are the chances that the old cabin has survived? https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/7132/
Abandoned cabin in Black Canyon, Eastern Washington. Nikon N2000, Nikkor 28-50mm f3.5 AIS, Ilford XP2 film.

frown.gif I suspect that aspen grove on the drive to the TH is toast, too. They were quite magnificent in the fall.

Some f'ing fool started that one. Looks like Black Canyon and the Umtanum Creek area are all toast. So much for Umtanum Ridge.

Just saw the latest map for area covered by the fire and my heart sank in grief. Had been planning for a few aspen season traverses to admire bighorn sheep and the other inhabitants of this marvelous region of folded mountains and creek narrows. May all the crews be safe, further homes and structures spared, and wildlife disperse. In the years to come may we all watch the land renew, contribute to stewarding its transformation, and learn from its response and adaptations to disturbance. But oh how I loved those Umtanum Canyon aspens and the apples too: https://www.yellowleaf.org/scramble/g/r/2019-10-28-umtanum.html

Ugh, it didn't dawn on me that Umtanum Creek Canyon was burning until I looked at the map, too. I'm glad I got to enjoy the old apple and pear trees last fall but am so sad that we've lost those pieces of history.

So sad to hear this. I tried to hike Umtantum Ridge in April 2018 but didn't realize until I got there that my hike coincided with the Yakima Skyline trail running event. The trail was too busy for my tastes so I hung out in the trailhead parking lot, enjoyed the view, and cheered on the runners as they finished. Beautiful area and one I meant to return to. Sad to hear I may be too late. frown.gif Wishing safety for the firefighters and all who live in the area.
