Sad! I had no idea Baring was a base jumping site, let alone destination. RIP. Rumi

Baring has a huge almost vertical wall. It's a pretty popular spot for this activity. I got to see a guy land in Barclay Lake once while on a hike there. He casually got out of the water and went on his way.

North wall of Baring was one of Beckeys big things back in the day. Massive overhang makes it an inviting base, but things go wrong. RIP

And the site of his partner's (Richard Berge) death in 1952 while exploring a route up the north face. Mt Berge bears his name in memorial. Berge was also 23. RIP to both young men.

I was with some friends a number of years ago, descending from Mt. Baring. We met three guys on their way up with big heavy packs. We asked them if they were training for Mt. Rainier or something, and they said that, no, they were going to the summit to base jump off of it. The next morning I read in the Seattle Times that a base jumper in a party of three had died. Apparently he had hit a ledge on Mt Baring's North face on the way down. So, sadly, it looks like history has repeated itself. RIP to the fallen person and condolences to his friends and family.

This might be the location? There is an obvious ledge on the initial descent. RIP

Years ago I was bc skiing and happened upon the guy in the video (Mathieu Girard) moments before he skied off of Mississippi Head (Mt. Hood) then opened a parachute. In that instance a helicopter showed up to film his ego trip. To each his own. Very sorry to hear that someone else has lost their life while participating in what is obviously an exhilarating, but dangerous activity.

The video is from Baring. They say so at the end of the video.
