I've been posting GISsurfer fire maps on my twitter feed. @mappingsupport Most fire maps you see anywhere rely on two main sources of data. #1. MODIS and VIIRS satellites. Two of each. After a satellite collects data for a fire it takes NASA ~3 hours to process that data before it can be displayed on any map. Typically maps that display this data will show it for all fires if you pan the map. This data will sometimes include 'false positives' when the fire is (1) throwing up a huge smoke plume with hot embers and (2) the satellite 'sees' the fire near the edge of the strip of land that the satellite scans. #2. Nighttime plane flyover with infrared sensing gear. This is more sensitive than the satellites but it is only done for certain fires. This IR data is posted on the NIFC FTP server for anyone to use. Typically maps that display this data show it for a single fire. One nice thing about this data is that it includes the fire perimeter. Thus if you have a map that shows the fire perimeter from an infrared flight the previous night and satellite hotspots that were sensed later, then you can have a sense of the direction the fire is moving. Finally, under certain conditions the fires can move *very* fast at any time. Some years ago the King fire in California burned ~50,000 acres in one night. If you are ever told to evacuate you absolutely need to get your butt in gear and go.

That story is incorrect 500,000 are under evacuation orders or warnings actual displaced is around 50,000. Lets not make it any worse than it is which is more than bad enough.

Thanks for the correction, MC. I posted that last night after hearing half a million displaced on NPR. Just googled it and I'm seeing news both ways, under evacuation orders, or already fled. It's hard to know what's going on. But 50k sounds much more realistic than 500k.

I know six of them who live in the McKenzie River valley. All are alive. They know one house survived and have hopes for the other house, which is in Vida. They saw a picture at the bottom of their driveway and the trees were not burned. As for wind speeds-- when a big fire gets going, it makes its own weather and all bets are off. There is a roar and trees start whipping around. Embers fly, trees can fall, etc.You can duplicate this in miniature by having a rip roaring campfire or slash pile going. Whether trees survive depends on the intensity of the fire. If the cambium layer, which is protected by the bark, gets too hot, the tree is history. If you know what to look for, and I don't, you can chop into a bit of the bark and see what shape the cambium is in. Westside fires tend to burn in thick duff and they smolder at least until a few heavy rains have gone through.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

Yeah, it was a classic fog of crisis case. The report of a half million actually evacuated went out widely and got corrected the next day, being a half mil under some level of evac zone.

I have a friend who drove through flames to get away from Detroit and she lost her home. The town is gone.

I've got quite a bit of family in Springfield/Eugene. One aunt and uncle had to evacuate, they live out near Vida.

The smoke moved in here overnight at Priest Lake, unbelievable how thick it is!

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

I heard the Governor of Oregon speak on the news last night. She said dozens are missing and four were known dead. Hopefully, many of the missing are just in a confused state of their lives and have been unable to report.

Update from Breitenbush Hot Springs per facebook: "Due to the efforts of the Breitenbush Fire Department, Breitenbush Hot Springs still stands! Communication has been difficult but this is what we know: Most of the buildings have survived so far. The Lodge, the Villa/Kitchen, Powerhouse, Office/Gift Shop, Filter House and many others. Most of our community homes are still standing. In the words of one community member, "This is an unfathomable blessing." Unfortunately, not all was spared. The raging fire destroyed our Sanctuary, Vista (massage) House, our Bathhouse, all of our guest cabins, the footbridge over the Breitenbush River and more. This fire also consumed much, if not all, of our neighboring "Summer Homes" community. Our love goes out to them."

Have friends who live near Talent did not hear from them for a couple days and was worried. Heard from them yesterday, they said fire was limited to downtown area and was terrible there. They live out of town on a hilltop where they are the only house. They have recently cleared out a large area around the house. Seem to have dodged the bullet.

I also have a friend down by Talent who just made it back into their house today, and they even have power going (and have invited other community members who may not be so lucky to come crash there...).
