We hiked the length of the Entiat River Trail this last weekend and took a very brief detour (accidentally) down to Snowbrushy Meadows. I snapped a picture of a blackened sign on a tree and when I got home and looked at the picture this THING was in the background like a metal poltergeist or sasquatch. We hadn't noticed it at all!

It looks like some kind of rocket, windmill contraption with a paint can on top! Anyone know what it might be???

Surprisingly, it’s a windscreen for a rain gauge. But you’re totally right, looks liked an alien has landed.. If you search for “alter shielded rain gauge” you should find what you’re looking for.

Thank you, Jaberwock! It looks like it could be for snow, too?

The snow pillow would generally be down low.  See https://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/about/mon_automate.html

Sorry, but you can't solve this thing until this thing is solved.

Ongoing since 2007.

I should bump it. Again.
