web browsers: I have grown tired of the current flock of windows browsers. firefox, opera, chrome, etc... Full of ads, redirects. I have been unable to play the videos on many posts here. Now I have a newer computer running windows 7 and a new browser... I am trying out the 360 browser and videos play, no ads and so far I like it better......

up.gif up.gif I wish I had a Win7 machine. I have 8.1 and really do not like it. Also, I most often use my wife's MacBook, and while it is quite a bit faster, the Mac OS is *so* obtuse, it drives me nuts. Often I long for the good old days with DOS 3 on an 8086 & dialup BBS systems! Which even on a 2400kb circuit, responded about as fast as my current 100Mb service with all the extraneous useless stuff. Although video would have been "pipe dream". lol.gif

Meh. DOS didn't really get good until 3.3. XCOPY changed the world.

Software engineer here, 360 Browser is Chinese state sponsored malware. Here are the results of an independent security audit I found linked on Wikipedia. I strongly encourage you to uninstall it and consider moving from Windows 7 to Windows 10 as well. Windows 7 is marked End of Life as of January of this year. Meaning it is no longer supported by Microsoft and you are putting yourself at advanced risk for security issues. My recommendation to you would be to use a combination of Windows 10, Firefox, and Ublock Origin. Other common adblockers are often in cahoots with marketing agencies and allow them to pay them to whitelist their ads. Such as Adblock Plus. If you really want to go to the next level, set up Pi-Hole on your home network. I run it on a Docker container on an Odroid XU4Q single board computer and it works quite well. Blocks ads for all devices on my network.

Thing you have to understand about a web browser is you gotta hit that refresh. Hit that fresh button or whatever. Thats all you can really do. Other than that, you gotta just resort to calling Comcast, yell at 'em till they get that page to load for you! Make them do it!

I have a 6 month-old, low end laptop running Windows 10 and Microsoft Edge. Works like a champ, videos and webpages load and run instantly. I don't get pop-ups or redirects. What is the fuss all about? Here is one thing: I don't run Facebook. My wife claims her account ran too slow on the previous computer, also a low end Windows machine, the only difference is she uses Facebook a lot. She has hardly used the new one so no comparison there. I had no issues with speed on the old one either. Can anyone speak to how much bandwidth Facebook uses while monitoring everything you do? Could it cause a significant difference?

Ports? You mean tabs? Sounds like you have a virus or malware on your computer.

I wouldn't necessarily panic quite yet. He could be talking about established TCP connections. Or ports used for inter process communication. Could be flagged by some malware detection software that's being a little paranoid. If it's actually listening on ports on an external network interface, yeah that would be weird. If you're worried about privacy, FF (always run the latest) is a good bet. See zimmertr's comments above.

No, Firefox does open multiple ports when it's running, but most of them are loopback connections that are used for security purposes. It's nothing nefarious at all. I'd bet most modern browsers do something similar.
