Do bears down by the Sultan McDonald’s count? He was standing straight up on his hind legs for extra credit
Sure, if it is a wild bear, even if it likes to hang around and eat old Big Mac wrappers. Extra credit? Only if it was dancing while standing up. edit for Nancy: Standing up is pretty ordinary for bears. But doing cartwheels or standing on its front paws would be exceptional and worthy of extra credit fersure. Your bear 'dining' at McDonalds while standing up AND waving its paws is certainly good for 1.5 credits! (I love making up these rules!)

I never see bears. Well, almost never. I hike with my dogs, so I suppose that's probably why. Two weeks ago on Icicle Ridge I found lots of scat and a small pool of water in an otherwise very dry area and all the vegetation around the pool was matted down so I'd guess there's a bear in that area that gets his drinks from there.

Sadly 0 bears on Whidbey Island this year, so my all-time total is still 1 from last year. This year, just 1 yearling or small sow on Mystery Ridge. I came close to many others in the Baker drainage but only laid eyes on the shaking of plants as they crashed away.

Ok, uh, are you toying with me (us)? Your horse wanted to get a better look at the bear, is that it? I've ridden a horse twice in my lifetime, can you tell?

Grizzlys are notorious around the summit of Francs Peak and aboce treeline up there. They dig under the rocks to eat the moths!

I just thought that too! Was yours a grizz? That counts for ten.

Yes, they are all grizzlies up there. Black bears typically stay below treeline in WY

The better to find human food and the better to keep from being beaten up by grizzlies (or eaten up).🍴

Just 1 for me, but it was a close encounter. I was on the Sourdough Mtn trail near the top of the meadows, hiking with my head down. I heard chewing noises and looked up. The bear was just off the trail at a switchback. It continued to eat while I shouted at it and only decided to move on when some hikers coming down hill added to the noise.

Josh and I saw a cinnamon bear coming up the Suiattle River trail while we were headed down it about 4 miles from Sulphur trail head. I had my head down wearily and just so happened to look up when we were 50 feet away. I had to shoo the bear off the trail and it slowly lumbered into a creek and headed uphill. Didn't stop to take a photo. It was super hot and we were all miserable.

Two, just today. Was coming down from doing a loop (Doe Falls Trail, bushwhack into the NE Corner of MRNP, over to Buck Lake, then back down via Suntop Trail) and had just hopped into the truck and started driving down, when my comrade, Bruce, called out a black shape running across the road. Sure enough, looked like a bear, albeit a small one. We stopped near where he/she had crossed and I looked up and saw that what we had seen was junior-- Mama was standing on her back legs on top of the bank above us and giving us the evil eye! She held that pose for a minute or more, then dropped down and she and junior headed up the hill. She was no further than 30-40 feet from me, so I was glad to have some steel between me and her!
