See my post in "How does self-registration work." I'm wondering if that poster is this guy.

My guess is no because the poster who created this thread goes by "aidapsibr." When I googled that screen name I get this twitter account, which belongs to a female from Seattle.

Nice sleuthing. I'm glad to hear it, since that poster described themselves as a newbie, and you wouldn't want to find out that that person tried to do the Mother Mountain loop as a dayhike.

Weather was pretty bad up there... especially the higher/more exposed portions northeast of spray park. If i remember correctly, thats a spot where navigating in heavy weather would be challenging too.

Could there have been any river crossings that could have been problematic?

I heard that recently some bridges have washed out - such as White River bridge - its gone. As far I as I know, there could be two crossings of the Carbon river - once by using the suspension bridge (i.e. safe, I think), then further down the river to cross back the other way - this had a log bridge during the summer, but its possible that one washed away too in the recent rains. In that case the crossing *could* be hazardous.
I am unsure if you can hike back toward Ipsut via the west side of Carbon and not have to cross it at all - I know there were trail washouts on that route. Perhaps someone here can clarify.

Joseph, Last year I did that trail from Ipsut up river on the west side. Its very sketchy and not safe in a few spots. There is a stretch where if you slip, you will go right in the raging Carbon River which pushes right up against the steep dirt/rock bank. Initially when you leave the 'good' trail, heading up river, its very hard to even spot this old tread.

I haven't been able to find any news updates in the past 2 days about the search. The weather has been pretty bad

Thats the exact spot where weather would have been worst and finding the trail could have been most challenging. I dont know if there was snow on the ground at that time... telemetry from paradise is right on the edge in regards to snow. Either way it was blowing hard in clouds/fog, with temps near freezing.

If they found his water bottle above Marmot Creek at 5500 ft in Mist Park then he had already done 3/4 of the loop and walked into a blizzard above timberline. If he was still in Mist Park or Spray Park he should have been found by air during clear days in the past week. There's not a lot of terrain that he could have gotten in trouble in after that point other than wandering around in meadows unable to find the trail. It sounds a lot like Rachel Lokoduk last year on Hidden Lake Peak (who still hasn't been found).

Oh, gosh. I know they are frantic but the appeal contains incorrect info. The Zion hiker was missing for 11-12 days, not 19, and in much better weather. But now tens of thousands of signers think that the NPS at Rainier called off the search too soon, that other parks search longer. And there isn't a good weather window for searchers right now, unlike what the petition says.
