Dates: November 1st, 2020
Distance: 10.5 miles on bike, 14.5 miles by foot
Ascent: 5,432'
I've recently moved to the East side of Lake Washington from the Capitol Hill area. The biggest change for me has been trading morning coffee with a view of the Cascades, for sunsets and a view of the Olympics. My old commute to work from Cap Hill to downtown is a close second. With that said, I've been staring The Brothers and Constance in the face for a few weeks now and felt compelled to head that way when a sunny weekend hit. I spent Thursday and Friday sending Geyer Teams messages at work about The Brothers, trying to convince him it should be in our weekend plans. He was weary of our weak, late season state and the 18 mile round trip. For that reason, we settled on a 25 mile round trip to Old Dessie .
We were on the road at 4:50a, heading towards the Carbon River with bikes on the rack and good attitudes. We arrived just before 6a, with two other cars at the TH, and hit the trail on our bikes. I was riding my gravel bike, and Brad, his fancy new hardtail mountain bike. The trail/road was enjoyable with just enough incline to keep you warm on a cool November morning. There were two sections within a mile of Ipsut Creek Campground, that I walked my bike due to less than ideal riding conditions (i.e. rocky river bed). We locked up our steads at Ipsut Creek and headed off on foot. There was a log crossing over the Carbon River, though the carnage of old bridges/logs, showed it likely won't last too long.
Our first extended break was near the base of the Carbon Glacier, which is quite a site.

The trail began climbing steadily, paralleling Moraine Creek. We hopped off the Wonderland Trail around 5350'. First came a short section of forest, then talus and boulders, until we were at the meadows of Moraine Park. I opted to stay high on the rocks, Brad walked through Moraine Park. We both met up at the base of the rocky slope leading up to the summit of Old Desolate. From there it was rock hopping and shifting rocks as far as the eye could see.
We enjoyed summit beers, a summit nap, and the unexpected warmth of a November sun. Brad did not enjoy his pastrami sandwich that he later found sitting in on a log, back at Ipsut Creek where we parked our bikes.
