I went up Mailbox on Friday when the weather looked decent in Seattle in spite of the forecast. There wasn't any rain or snow all day. The new trail on the north side was shielded from the wind most of the way, but once on the talus slope and the final ridge the wind was strong enough to make me lose my balance a couple times. I don't like hiking Mailbox with all the crowds it has most days, but there were only a few small parties out this day. It was actually quite pleasant because I had the right gear.

That reminds me of when Mailbox was on my regular rotation, back around the turn of the century. I pretty much only did it this time of year, when things closer to the crest were snowing in but not yet really good for ski touring. So yeah, it was often a great "gear test" hike biggrin.gif
