Monolith Discovered in Utah Red Rock Country
I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the "News of the Strange ... " thread in the Saloon.

I wonder if it was installed April 1st, but nobody noticed until recently.
Reminds me of this "art" installation:

Randito - you have to give some credit to those who went thru the trouble of hauling that stuff out to the middle of nowhere. Except for those aliens, with all that advanced technology. But you'd think they'd be beyond screws/rivets.

okay... so.... does it play György Ligeti's "Requiem" when you walk up to it and touch it?

I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each."

This was reported on both the local and National news. "Monolith"? It's a piece of metal out in the desert, ho hum, are we really that bored?
"A monolith is a geological feature consisting of a single massive stone or rock, such as some mountains, or a single large piece of rock placed as, or within, a monument or building. Erosion usually exposes the geological formations, which are often made of very hard and solid igneous or metamorphic rock.".
It's not a rock, lol.

It was actually discovered on Reddit this time! And in a very clever way I might add.
https://old.reddit.com/r/geoguessr/comments/jzw628/help_me_find_this_obelisk_in_remote_utah/gdfbzee/?context=3
Quote: | I looked at rock type (Sandstone), color (red and white - no black streaks like found on higher cliffs in Utah), shape (more rounded indicating a more exposed area and erosion), the texture of the canyon floor (flat rock vs sloped indicating higher up in a watershed with infrequent water), and the larger cliff/mesa in the upper background of one of the photos. I took all that and lined it up with the flight time and flight path of the helicopter - earlier in the morning taking off from Monticello, UT and flying almost directly north before going off radar (usually indicating it dropped below radar scan altitude. From there, I know I am looking for a south/east facing canyon with rounded red/white rock, most likely close to the base of a larger cliff/mesa, most likely closer to the top of a watershed, and with a suitable flat area for an AS350 helicopter to land. Took about 30 minutes of random checks around the Green River/Colorado River junction before finding similar terrain. From there it took another 15 minutes to find the exact canyon. Yes... I'm a freak. |

Great. Some dipstick do-gooder(s) have already removed it:
Facebook post from the BLM:
"Here is our official statement on the rumors surrounding the "#Monolith:" We have received credible reports that the illegally installed structure, referred to as the “monolith” has been removed from Bureau of Land Management (BLM) public lands by an unknown party. The BLM did not remove the structure which is considered private property. We do not investigate crimes involving private property which are handled by the local sheriff’s office. The structure has received international and national attention and we received reports that a person or group removed it on the evening of Nov. 27.”
Maybe the guys who found it should have been a tad more discreet, their photos gave enough clues to its location, as zimmertr noted. Some interesting speculation here about the maker (I think the NYT will let nonsubscribers read one free article/day):
Did John McCracken make that monolith in Utah?
"The artist’s son, Patrick McCracken, remains completely puzzled by the monolith. But when he heard the news, he thought back to an evening in May 2002, when his father was living in Medanales, N.M., in a small adobe house overlooking a mesa. 'We were standing outside looking at the stars and he said something to the effect of that he would like to leave his artwork in remote places to be discovered later,' he recalled in a phone interview."
Or maybe, since the "apes" have discovered it, the monolith has been removed to Mars ... kinda like in that movie.

Gotta admit, I enjoyed being mad about the Phone Booth installation in wilderness.
