Hiked from White River to Sunrise today. Perfect Fall day. I don't think people realize 410 from Enumclaw is open and you can still drive to White River Campground. Saw two cars in the parking lot when I arrived around 1 pm, none when I departed at 5 pm. 1 person on the trial, which means there was basically no one hiking the super popular Glacier Basin and Emmons Moraine trails. Saw maybe five cars at Summerland, no cars at Owyhigh Lakes, and two cars at Crystal Lakes. And there was no one checking passes at the gate. This is as empty as Rainier gets.

Set out for Gem Lake yesterday around 11:30 from the Alpental parking lot. Surprising amount of people on the trail but it was Veteran's Day (Happy Veteran's Day to all the Veterans on here!). I thought my gaiters and microspikes were overkill for the first mile or so but on the ascent up to the ridge the stamped down snow was fairly slippery and I watched some hikers without traction walking very carefully to avoid slipping. Snow Lake was gorgeous and still on an overcast day. Hiked around to the beginning of the ascent up to Gem Lake where previous hikers had turned around and we found about 16" of fresh snow to wade through. Yay gaiters! With a slower pace and fading light we decided to turn around so we could have a cold one at Dru Bru and make it back to Seattle by dinner time. After our next weather system rolls through you might have to bring your snowshoes and watch the Avi report if you want to enjoy a thermos of hot mint tea next to Snow Lake. smile.gif

11/19/2020 lunch at Mason Lake (via Ira Spring Trail). My son and I were the second car at the Ira Spring trailhead last Thursday. We were happy it wasn't raining when we got there. It started snowing shortly after we crossed Mason Creek on the way up. We hit real (more than patches of) snow around 3,000 feet. We passed the owner of the other vehicle shortly thereafter. He had turned around because he didn't have snowshoes and got tired of post holing. We put on our snowshoed after the trail switched back toward the lake--probably around 3,800 feet. We had lunch at the outlet of Mason Lake, but got cold fast once we stopped moving. I had planned to continue on toward Mount defiance, but we decided to head back to the car after lunch. We didn't see anyone else. Fun trip.

Dusk up to Artists Point. You can still see the outline of the parking lot...more snow needed.

Hey @cyclopath where was this, also did one of you snowshoe and one of you XC skis? I am looking for some nice chill trails to XC skis that are off the groomed nordic tracks. Also what kind of skis/width are those? I am new to hiking/adventuring in the winter months and want to get snowshoes and skis. Thanks!! Looks sick!!!

South Bessemer Mountain on Saturday December 12. Perfect weather, blue skies. Snowshoes went on between 3500 - 4000. Broke trail to the summit. Crazy (and beautiful) surface hoar on summit, possibly signs of a weak layer around 5000 elsewhere on southern facing cascade peaks. Views of Garfield and the alpine lakes interior were epic. Would make a decent ski tour with a bit more snow.
