I don't think this event has been posted here yet. ? There will be a Great Conjunction in a few days. The two largest planets in our solar system will appear conjoined on the evening on December 21--the Winter Solstice. These two planets get close every 20 years or so, but this time they get really close--not since the year 1226.
Let's hope the clouds part for us to see this. As some of you may already been watching the two planets in the southwestern sky getting closer this fall. Here's a brief article from CBS News (You have to scroll through a few ads to read it).
Quote from the article:
"Alignments between these two planets are rather rare, occurring once every 20 years or so, but this conjunction is exceptionally rare because of how close the planets will appear to one another," Rice University astronomer Patrick Hartigan said in a statement. "You'd have to go all the way back to just before dawn on March 4, 1226, to see a closer alignment between these objects visible in the night sky." ~z

Thank you for posting that article. Straight information, easy to read, and no ads.
Some great tips especially this one:
Be sure to go outside on a few different nights, and see how their separation changes.

The forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday night is fairly clear, but the moon will be half full , so Saturn and Jupiter might be a bit washed out.

^ I just got a phone call from Sequim telling me it's snowing up there right now.

It was clear last night in Winthrop but it's been snowing heavily since last night.

Yeah, the planets would have to align for us to have any chance of seeing it tonight.

Well, don't despair.
Here we are--an hour's worth of live streaming from Vanderbilt Dyer Observatory in Middle Tennessee. Enjoy, ~z

I plan to meet up with a friend who provides both a telescope and large strong binoculars. He tells me that one can see the moons of both planets looking like they are interspersed although they are millions of miles apart. Very cool. Hope you see them!
