I started up the trail to Snow Lake at 3:00 this afternoon. It was a late start and there were alot of people coming out--even more it seemed than you might see on a July or August day. I was pretty surprised. I was thinking it would be nice if the steps they put in at the beginning of the trail were just a tiny bit wider as I found myself going up alongside them to avoid the people coming down. The weather was cool but I didn't need a sweater and gloves until I got down into the lake basin . I noticed my nose seemed to be running faster than I was. There is about 1/2 inch of snow at the top of the ridge and a packed down dusting on the trail down to the lake. The small waterfall going into the lake is frozen and looks neat. I went down to the outlet and turned around. I think I was the last person up, and probably the last person out as I didn't see anyone up there. By this time it was getting dark so I turned around and headed out. It was pretty dusky by the time I got to the boulder field, one of the lighter areas of the trail, and getting darker...harder to see (yes, I know, where was my flashlight? ). I made it down the steps and back to my car at 7:00. Here I quickly made use of a kleenex and a technique commonly called the whale blow. I was glad someone had invented it.
Spotted one pika and no bandersnatches of the fumerous or nonfumerous variety.
