Sad to report the first death at Mount Rainier in 2021. A 65-year-old woman from Eatonville died Jan. 9th near Ricksecker Point. Here's the park press release: https://www.nps.gov/mora/learn/news/visitor-fatality-and-recovery-at-ricksecker-point.htm

I don't recall ever stopping by here on the way to the Paradise area. Very sad news. Sincere condolences to her friends, family, and loved ones. frown.gif The viewpoint overlooks the Nisqually River--about halfway between Longmire and the main visitor center at Paradise. A Google Maps link. The street view guy can be dragged to one of two photos at the lookout point. The farthest one west gives a perspective on the terrain there. Could be hazardous especially if one were to step up or over that low wall. I would imagine there was plenty of snow there perhaps covering the wall. ~z

I've stopped there a time or two, but in the winter I thought that little access road was closed.

My understanding is that they had a young dog on a leash that wiggled free and was running loose and the woman in process of chasing after the dog fell over the cliff

It is closed and not plowed in winter, but people hike/snowshoe on it.
