Looking across Lake Washington to some I-90 places A labeled view . . .
Winter has such beautiful sunsets. We couldn’t resist putting in a view of the Cascades looking across Lake Washington from December 27, 2020, when the sunset confirmed that we should go snowshoeing the next morning . . .
Our approximate route
We’ve been curious about snowshoeing the lower part of South Rampart Ridge up toward Dungeon Pk. Skiers describe routes up in the area. We started at the Gold Creek Sno Park in icy fog. Shortly after the berm at the end of the road there is an unmarked old road on the left. We followed the road for about ˝ mi before going directly up the ridge through the forest heading toward a bend in FS #141 at about 3600’.
Just wandering up lower slopes of S. Rampart-Dungeon ridge Breaking out of forest above 3600 . . . Remaining in the clouds on nice snow for snowshoeing . . . No other tracks this day . . . no skiers, no snowmachiners . . . Really frosty in the cold fog Frost on brush was growing as we watched
It was really nice snowshoeing seeing the frost on trees. After crossing the road at 3600’, sort of a landmark, we continued directly up the ridge, then soon crossing FS #141 again. As we continued up, we started seeing shadows, and it got brighter. At about 4100’ we popped out of the fog. What views we had!
We started seeing hints of shadows as we went further up . . . More color started showing up . . . Nicely decorated trees and blue above I think this is like going from IFR to MVFR . . . This is really enjoyable snowshoeing . . . Entering the VFR world . . . Suddenly a lot to look at . . . Sunlight feels good! Mt Margaret (L) A view West, Tinkham (L) to McClellan Butte (R) A view West - labeled View, Bandera (L) to Wright Mtn (R) Labeled . . . Granite Mtn and West Granite A view South, to Fifes Peaks (C) View includes Revolution Pk (L) to Wright Mtn (R) More peaks . . . More peaks - labeled A view North to some Snoqualmie Pass Peaks A view North - labeled Snoqualmie Pass-North peaks Some of the many peaks of Kendall Peaks . . . Mt Thomson (C)
We rejoined FS #141 at roughly 4460’ and followed it through some big trees until it started to leave the ridge. We left it and went to a nice knoll in the sun where we ate our lunch and enjoyed more views, particularly Dungeon Pk, which was close above us.
Dungeon Pk (C) Dungeon Pk Steep chute on Dungeon Pk Mt Margaret and Margaret-South Pk Rampart Ridge SE Peak Rampart Ridge SE Pk (L) and Mt Margaret (C) A nice knoll . . . Dungeon Pk (L) and Mt Margaret (R)
We had already pushed down a lot of snow and decided to turn around at that point. We lingered as much as we could, enjoying the views as we descended our route.
Still some big trees in places . . . This is really fun snowshoeing . . . Just hanging around enjoying viewpoints before we drop back down into the fog . . The colors remind of Rockwell Kent's Greenland paintings . . . Frost and snow highlight areas of big tall trees . . . Think this is a preview of what the Cascades will look like when the sea level rises 3500' . . . don't think there will be snow then though . . . Winter afternoons can sure have nice colors . . . The Seattle art museums remain closed for now . . . snowshoeing here is a good substitute on this day . . . Pausing for the view before we descend . . . Ours are still the only tracks on this day . . . It's been nice up here, but down we go! Sunbeams on snow in a laden forest . . . Retracing our route . . . Closer to the cloud deck . . . Last sunlight on trees above . . . Local sunset . . . Still frosty as color fades . . .

Looks like an awesome trip! I absolutely love the labeled panoramas with all of the peak names.

Is it a good ridge to follow all the way to Dungeon Peak or will it cliff out? I saw often people go to Dungeon peak from the other side (from the lake).

some names - You two do your best work in the winter! This is a great idea for a winter snowshoe.
kitya - I have not climbed Dungeon from this side but have driven up to the knoll when there's not snow on it. It's a really rough road. Others have climbed Dungeon from the knoll and said there is a very steep section that had some ropes hanging down for safety, at least the rope was there years ago when they tried it.

Thanks Puzzlr! We do like winter trips. We like summer trips too . . . just don't seem to get as many rainy days then to get around to posting them.
Kitya - we agree with Puzzlr. We've been up Dungeon from the Lake Lillian side in no snow season. Wish it wasn't so long to get in that way in the winter. We are adding a few recent pictures of the summit area from slightly different angles hoping that helps you visualize.
Dungeon Pk - Nov 2020 Dungeon Pk - Nov 2020 Dungeon Pk - Nov 2020 Dungeon Pk - Dec 2020 Dungeon Pk - Jan 2021 Dungeon Pk - Jan 2021 just an idea . . .
Kitya - will PM you a couple of links
