Whoo hoo, we got er done! THANK GOD we changed plans last minute and did it last weekend instead of this weekend. The Olympic Hiking Company was really great to work with, and I highly recommend them. Anyway, here's the write up with pics and stuff http://slowesthiker.com/blog/the-shipwreck-coast/

Great trip! So sad about the Chilean Memorial, it was upright in November when we were there so it must have taken a beating in that last round of storms. Not surprised, that whole cove looks like it gets hit hard. I agree with you that I don't know how people stay at Chilean, I think it must be a summer thing. In November we barely found a place tucked back up in the trees. It does make for a lovely moonlight lit cove, though.

Back in the day there was sheltered camping at Chilean Memorial but the area has eroded significantly. Now you can only camp at the Bach in summer. Last time we camped there in summer we set up camp and took a dayhike up beach when we returned there were tents on every square inch of available beach, Nie Wieder!

In researching Chilean, I found videos of this and was amazed! It is beyond my how they have 99+ permits available for that section of beach.

There used to be one perfect campsite at Chilean, safe from high tide. That was ten years ago. Sad to hear it’s gone.

Where about was it? The only spot I saw that might have been good up above the beach close to the memorial was where the privy is now. We were able to fit our tent next to a large log off the trail up on the headland just south of the memorial. Good protection from elements during the winter but no view.

I’ve been past Chilean four times, never knew about any trail or headland. I went from Rialto to Cedar creek and back only going over one knife edged ridge-let about a mile before Cedar. Map doesn’t show a bluff trail.

Just before the memorial and a rocky outcropping/headland, there was a buoy and rope. It lead to a trail over the the headland and down to the beach again and memorial area.

I planned to be around Cape Johnson at low tide, just to the north, so I must have never even looked for it. Thanks.

Awesome, glad you were able to get a weather window. I believe the Chilean memorial got hit hard in the January storms, a lot erosion on the coast recently, coast is always in flux.

Also, if anyone knows the solo female I mentioned, I'd love to know who she is. I feel like I need to worship her a little (no picture of her unfortunately... but if you know a younger gal who soloed this recently, she's surely the only one.)
And one more question... why is the bluff north of cape Johnson so dangerous? I was surprised by what a small deal it seemed, and was glad I knew not to go around it, because I surely would have otherwise.
