Montana state parks are seeing a record number of campground reservations. Camping was up 49% at Makoshika last year. And, the number of visitors overall went up dramatically. There were 128,288 visitors to the park in 2020. By comparison, there were 85,272 visitors in 2019. People from outside Montana accounted for 34% of those visitors. To the Lakota Indians, Makoshika meant bad earth or bad land. Today, as Montana's largest state park, the pine and juniper studded badland formations house the fossil remains of such dinosaurs as Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops.

It's also a record year in RV sales. There are 2-3 year waiting lists for some better quality ones.

Stores can't keep $15,000 bicycles in stock. Which, technically, means they're underpriced.

More people heading to the outdoors, good for people, bad for the outdoors.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

Youth soccer and baseball leagues here in King County are starting up their programs in the coming weeks -- so perhaps the crush on hiking trails won't be quite as bad this spring.

Makoshika's a great park. I count on being able to roll in every year without a reservation. That may not be the case now.

Yeah, especially if budgets for staffing, maintenance and repair aren't increased. It's hard for me to enjoy the outdoors amidst crowds. Might have to take extreme avoidance measures to find any solitude. frown.gif

As the thread here says Eastern Nevada is pretty lonely.

Driving across North Dakota is tedious enough, pedaling would be a real test of will, especially if there was a headwind.

I've been wondering about the status of kids' sports and I'm happy to hear this. Most parents that I know that enjoy the outdoors tell me they wish they could hike/ski/fish/camp more often but kids sports have become so consuming that they can't. Though I know it will be a tough year again, and one that requires some creativity. I surf travel message boards and sense that A LOT of people from around the US are planning trips to WA's national parks this year. No one is planning trips to cities or cruises. Assuming they open (they didn't last year) I'm headed to a backcountry lodge in AK as my main vacation. Maybe I won't hike as much here, but at least I will have that.

Yup, I would think so, yet I see them every year. They must be some VERY dedicated bikers, I'd say.

It it a classic. I've done the Pacific Coast Route and it was very scenic every step of the way. For the Northern Tier I would consider using Amtrak from Cut Bank,MT to Fargo,ND
