Only for weekend warriors. People using Si/Mailbox as a conditioner usually go before and/or after work on weekdays. |
Do they ever lock the gates at night?

Yes. I've been locked in. But in a kindler, gentler time when they would leave a note with info about how to let yourself out. I don't suspect that would be the case now.

The Teneriffe gate was still locked closed at 712am this past Wednesday morning. Si and Little Si gates were open. Sign says the gate is open now from 700am to 400pm.

Ok, this is a question from an "outsider": why the locked gates? It's not like the mountain has to have employees in order to be open for business like WalMart. This sounds...well, nevermind....

They lock it at night to keep folks from camping up there and keggers.

A few years ago some of the trees escaped and went on a rampage. Trees are nocturnal so they only have to lock the gate at night.

The original Little Si and Teneriffe lots had no gates, no red tape, and no permits required.
It was nice to be able to do those hikes in the evening without risking a major hassle with authorities at the end.
Building lots out of site from the main road (Mailbox) seems dumb to me. So does locking gates for lots on/near main roads. I wonder how much money gets spent every year paying people to drive around and lock/unlock them nearly every day.

Why do they lock the gates? I've heard it's to reduce vandalism and misuse of the parking areas. This is why we can't have nice things :-)
02/16/2021 Pallets and a one-sided igloo with remnants of a fire in it. When we came down from Mailbox this was all cleaned up. 2017 Pallet burning debris at the Middle Fork trailhead (2 different fire "pits")
BTW, the recently published SEPA for East Snoqualmie Corridor Recreaction Plan - Phase II includes plans to pave the Mount Si trailhead.

Perhaps true in a different era. I live along Mt Si rd and ever since covid Mt Si is fully packed everyday even during the worst weather days. We've had a problem with people parking in our neighborhood for the trails even during a weekday. Hopefully not everyone is training for Rainier, gonna be another busy year!
