I spent a bit of time backpacking in the Adirondacks - shelters everywhere - lean-tos. Almost like little neighborhoods. "Today, the program comprises of 175 structures found all over the Adirondack Park" Adirondack Almanak My favorite: Duck Hole A hurricane busted the dam, swept away the bridge and drained the "hole". Now it is a wetland. I had my bachelor party at that lean-to. Canoed 3 lakes and a few miles of portage to get there.

Since I have no expectations of forgiveness, I don't do it in the first place. That loop hole needs to be closed to everyone.

We also really like the ones in Mount Mansfield State Park in Vermont. Mount Mansfield is the highest peak in Vermont and is the backside of Stowe Ski Area. During “Leafing Season” it was blissfully uncrowded and beautiful. The Long Trail passes nearby and there are a number of summit trails some of which are nontrivial. The other side with Stowe and Trapp Family Resort is an expensive madhouse then.

30 shelters are still standing in the Olympics. We just lost one this past winter when a Maple fell on it. I am currently working on a book about the Olympic shelters and hope to have it finished this fall/early winter.
