I had intentions of backpacking the Sierra High Route but I don't have any friends willing to do it with me and it's probably too dangerous to solo...
Why do you think this? It certainly won't be solitary (btw my daughter and I are doing it in August) and if you are not doing the loop with off trail travel you will be...on trail. The section we did last year was pretty straight forward, but we didn't go all the way to Whitney.

Lots of great places in Sierra with no people just a couple miles off the JMT or PCT. obscurity works lots o fish too.

Well it's an alpine route that is about 100 miles off trail and climbs over 33 mountain passes and crosses dozes of miles of unstable scree fields. Lots of class 3 action.

Every single trail report and video I've watched has described entire days of travel without seeing another person. The pandemic will probably alter this a bit but I do indeed think it would be quite solitary.

Two different "routes", somewhat similar names High Sierra Trail - basically on trail route from Crescent Meadow (i.e. west side) over the "Great Western Divide) and on to Whitney (east side) , maybe 60 miles. Well known route. I've done it west to east but turned north before Whitney. Sierra High Route was originally laid out by Steve Roper in book by that name. About 200 miles, much of it off trail, running from Kings Canyon north to Yosemite. Idea was to stay higher than the John Muir Trail which frequently dips low into river valleys. High Route requires mountaineering skills, route finding, has some creepy "passes" ond talus. I too would hesitate to do it solo though I have certainly considered it. It is the accumulated mass of the talus hazard that I notice. Years back I did the southernmost segment, up and over the Monarch Divide.

Thanks for adding that info, Eric. I wasn't sure if they were letting machismo cloud their judgement or not :P

My mistake, I was thinking the High Sierra Trail, not the High route....now I understand. We in fact are doing the Trail to Whitney and returning.

Goal: Do a traverse in Canada. Legally.

I never got around to Mt Olympus so that's a goal for me.
