We followed the description in Best Desert Hikes in WA today first we did the loops in the petrified forest and it was a great change fro the Issaquah Alps within few people. We then went on the trail listed as Ginkgo Petrified Forest Back country going up an old Jeep track with a sign saying State Park. We went up the old road to a bluff with a fantastic view of the river and the Vantage bridge. There were many footprints and a couple other parties. On the way down nearing the road we saw a sheriff’s deputy heading down to the river. When he saw he saw us he reversed up the road to the trail head with a large sign that said State Park. He called up to us and said did you see signs on the road that Sid no trespassing. We said we were just following instructions in the book. He asked where were we from and we said Issaquah and he said too bad. He then said it was private property. We said sorry and thanked him for the info. He then drove off.

This long link shows the parcels managed by the state in that area.

Dang - anyone up for a game of chess? But I'm curious, why does your map look so different from caltopo with the "Public Lands" overlay?

Ah, so caltopo represents state lands as one color, but you separate out PRC, DFW, and DNR. Cool.

Joey, thanks for the maps. It appears that someone either bought the cliff property and/or attempted to cut off access. The sight at the end of the road touts bighorn goats in the area and mentions nothing about access being forbidden. There was barbed wire strung low by the road but it stopped before the trailhead we used. I wonder if the owner wants to sell to the state or develop the land. Any access to the land must be from state land. Or up steep crumbly cliffs on the River.

Hoping to pass thru in a few weeks. I guess we will try to be stealthy.

Perhaps someone had visions of building a starter castle there.
Or at least threatening to do so in order to jack the price and sell to the state.

Yeah, that is a good possibility. The land is mostly useless for anything else being mostly 400’ cliffs. There are no farms in the area so I assume it is worthless for farming fantastic view though.

Maybe they're trying to raise mountain goats and milk them.
