What do you think could fill a while planet's atmosphere with oxygen other than living things?
Nonliving things.

You are the God of Thunder and Rock and Roll? If so, no problem, it's like when I am at the bar and drop all my money in the jukebox..

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

Life on Mars wouldn't change the question--just the place. Also, FWIW, there are likely non-bio, natural processes that can render free atmospheric O2. A planet with, say, large oceans and a star close enough or bright enough to free oxygen from water vapor with upper-band UV. In any event, until our telescopes are good enough to see reliable spectral lines in planetary atmospheres a dozen plus light years away, it's all speculation. In short, free oxygen used to be the holy grail sign for life--but that's being reconsidered.
