- A brushout, logout, and tread repair of the Appleton Pass and Boulder Lake trails in the northern Olympics. A four-day BCRT (Backcountry Response Team) organized by WTA. Y'all really oughta try one of these!
- It was another unusual BCRT, because instead of hiking several miles to camp, Olympic Park rangers hauled the volunteers in two separate pickup truck rides, one below the road washout and one above it. Then we hiked in the last couple of miles. Park staff also provided mule support to help haul in the tools.
- It was also unusual because in the national park, we could use round-blade power brushers, and Becca and Snoopy were authorized to use chainsaws! We had heavy-duty helmets with face shields and earmuffs.
- And hot springs! We stayed at Boulder Camp, a couple hundred yards from Olympic Hot Springs. Before the washout, you used to be able to drive all the way to the camp. Because it was the Memorial Day weekend, a lot of people braved the 10-mile road walk (!) but the camp is pretty spread out and there were just enough tent sites for everyone.
- A few crew members soaked in the hot springs. The consensus was that they're super funky but worth the visit.
- The leaders and volunteers worked incredibly hard, and everyone had a great time. We were able to brush out, log out, clean, rake, and repair both trails up to the snow line.
- Last but not least, Becca was an awesome crew leader, as usual! She continuously emphasized safety and we got LOTS of work done!
