This was a great hike for a rainy day. The Nature Conservancy is currently thinning the forest. Initially, many of the trails were going to be closed through the end of the year, but the NC recently reopened the trails for weekend use. Parked at the Coal Mines Trail lot and headed up to the ridge via Rocky's Run and Grotto trails. There were many unmarked paths along the way that were not on my cached map. I explored some paths in the Rat Pac area before heading back to explore the western area. Lots of lupine blooming right now. Checked out some interesting rock formations before heading down to the car. Only saw a couple people and two groups of mountain bikers. Ended up doing a little over 9 miles with plenty left to explore another time.
