Huckleberries are a great supplement to whatever food you bring on your trip. Once at Crystal Lake in Mt. Rainier, there were tons of huckleberries and we added them to our granola. Amazing. We also brought some home. Last year, the approach to Golden Lakes on the WT had **tons** of huckleberries along the trail - very distracting as the tendency was to stop and pick and eat them rather than hike, lol. Probably about a mile before Golden Lakes, heading clockwise, in early Sept.
With the drought and heat wave, huckleberry season sucked here in north Idaho, one well known spot that was loaded this time last year has nothing but dried up to nothing nubs. I did find a decent amount at my seekrit spot quite a ways up on a shaded, north slope. They went into the freezer to be used for future huckleberry daiquiris.
Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

This has been my experience so far too. Nowhere near enough rain, unfortunately. Even the thimble berries dried up before ripening
