I really did think I had that permit in the bag. The two ahead of me said they were not interested in the one I was going after (it was actually Indian Bar that was available, but I said Summerland in the story because it was less confusing) so I was kinda pissed when the ranger came out and crossed it off the list as soon as they went in. (Forgetting there are other permit stations that had also just opened.) Anyway, I hope you enjoy the story!!

The first time I saw "bear poles" was in the CA Sierras, and my thought was "tether ball for bears?".
Since I have no expectations of forgiveness, I don't do it in the first place. That loop hole needs to be closed to everyone.

Hi Kellbell. I missed out on the lottery and have been checking for reservations at Rainier. A Summerland reservation popped open for next week and I snagged it. I'm thinking of trying for a walk-up permit at Indian Bar to add a second day. What time did you arrive at the White River entrance?

Oof. I'm scrapping the trip to Rainier. Smoke forecast is sounding worse and already looking bad on that side of the mountain.

I didn't think smoke forecasts were reliable more than a few days out, couldn't next week be fine as far as smoke goes? All it takes is a shift in the direction of the wind.

Yeah that’s true. I saw the orange and red patches on the WA state air forecast moving a little bit further West this week. That and this high elevation smoke layer in Seattle just makes me want to avoid spoiling my week off. So we’ll head to the Olympics and hope for the best.

FYI you can get reception at summerland camp...at least when I stayed ther. I had Verizon back then, so not sure if other networks would work. It was strong and from several places.
