pretty sure this is the smoke plume, seen yesterday from about 2 miles up the Glacier Basin trail in MRNP.

Since I have no expectations of forgiveness, I don't do it in the first place. That loop hole needs to be closed to everyone.

The forecasts are showing a lot of smoke blowing into the western Cascades tomorrow as the wind directions change with the high pressure and heat wave. It looks like the winds won't start changing direction until the weekend, probably clearing the smoke out by Monday.

Crystal Mountain resort is closed today (8/12) because of "extremely poor air quality"......

Bumping River cooridor ordered to evac https://twitter.com/YakimaSheriff/status/1425935339500163073 Edit: I just noticed that the first data from daytime satellite passes has shown up on NASA's server. Note the uniform pattern of the northernmost red triangles. Any uniform pattern indicates the data *might* be false positive. Thanks to Tom 'live' maps are back!

Wow, yukon. That's such an excellent photo. Very dramatic. Slightly dumb question: Which volcano is that on the horizon? Looking at a map--1) Ellensburg, 2) the fire at Schneider Springs, and 3) Mt. Rainier appear to line up east to west. I mean Mt. Rainier and the center point of the fire (per Joey's map) line up on almost the same latitude. And Mt. Adams is to the south with a good deal of separation between the fire and Mt. Adams. But yukon took the photo from the Ellensburg area which makes me think that the volcano should be on the other side of the fire plume in this photo. It's like the image is reversed. I keep looking at the map and then back at the photo. If it's Mt. Rainier how do you get that horizon/profile from Ellensburg? Where are you standing? Thanks! ~z

Rainier is at the right, West, and the Schneider fire is to the left. Adams is hidden in the smoke further to the left. I’m looking in a SSW direction. The map you are looking at is oriented North at the top but I’m basically looking South, opposite direction so things are reversed.

Aha! That explains it. I couldn't figure out where you were standing in relation to Ellensburg. Thanks for clearing that up. ~z

Yikes - a lot of westward movement today. It's getting really close to Bumping Lake. Wonder if they'll be able to hold the line at FS 1800/1808. I was looking forward to exploring the colors around there this fall. Bummer. Hope it doesn't burn the Cougars or Twin Sisters/Tumac area.

FWIW: I was meteor gazing at Sunrise Point @ 3:30AM this morning with good results, but around 4:30AM the viewing degraded considerably as the skies became murky. When we started viewing one could see the outline of the mountain against the stars, but once the murk moved in there was no longervan outline. Saw a couple dozen perseid meteors before the murk moved in. Sunrise point was an OK location, but there was too much traffic with headlights on to really get your eyes adjusted, but since we had 5 and 7 year olds , hiking a hundred meters away from the road wasn't an option we were considering.

We went there to look for the comet last year. It was very crowded but not too many lights. Saw the comet. Great view to the north would be good for aurora.
